Phalander was always there to support and encourage other employees. He had the gift of making everyone comfortable, whether a new employee or an executive. He was one of the MTA’s unseen (and often unrecognized) army that keeps things moving behind the scenes. His dry sense of humor, and that crazy little car, would always make me smile. He would stick his head in my office when things were really bad and ask me something silly to make me laugh. And then he would say, “That’s what I’m talking about!” Not only a great employee, he was a gem of a gentleman. May he rest in peace with loving grace through eternity.

I knew Phalander for over 10 years. He was a frequent and welcome presence at my karaoke parties over the years. I’ll always remember him telling me to “lean into it” when singing R&B classics. That let me know the depth of his soul. The other fond remembrance I have is the “Phalander look”. There were times when the expression on his face and his body language made you feel like he was “in the know” and could share inside information with you that others weren’t privy to. That let me know the depth of his caring. One thing I am sure of is that his spirit is still leaning into it and knowing how to stay in that groove. He will be missed.

To Phalander’s beloved family, please accept my deepest condolences. I had the privilege of meeting Phalander when we both began working at Metro-North in 1996. Starting at the same time created an immediate connection, and over the years we shared many conversations about life, work, and everything in between.

Phalander carried a quiet wisdom with him. He listened carefully, spoke thoughtfully, and always offered advice that was grounded, peaceful, and kind. His presence had a calming effect, and he made people feel seen and valued simply by the way he engaged with them.

Please know that his life and character left a lasting impression on so many of us. He was deeply respected and sincerely loved. May it bring you comfort to know how meaningful his presence was and how fondly he will always be remembered. Lucy Accardo

Phalander, my heart is still shattered to know that you are no longer with us, but I know that you are not in pain, and that brings me some peace in my heart. I trust that you are resting in God’s presence, whole and at peace.

It was truly a pleasure to work with you for decades. We started around the same time in 1996, with cubicles near each other. It was almost like being roommates—getting to know each other’s habits, likes, and dislikes over the years. You were always kind, patient, and energetic, and you consistently brought a steady, positive presence to every space you entered.

I shared to your beautiful memorial page some photos of a group of us rollerblading through the Lincoln Tunnel to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis. I will never forget that the moment I mentioned the idea of forming a team for MS, you immediately said, “Let’s do it, Lucy.” Before we knew it, 25 more colleagues had joined our team. That was you- supportive, encouraging, and always willing to step forward for a good cause. Even 30 years ago, when we were young kids.. (the pictures are from 1997!)

So many great memories, Phalander. Thank you for your friendship, your leadership, your generosity of spirit, and the quiet, faithful example you set for all of us. To your family: please know how deeply loved and respected Phalander was, and how profoundly he impacted so many lives. We grieve with you, and we thank God for the gift of his life. Though our hearts are broken, we are grateful for the promise of faith...that this goodbye is not forever, and that we will see him again.
