Writing an obituary for a loving mother is hard, even with a template. Summing up the life of someone who forms the foundation of most families can feel like a gigantic task – but it is certainly achievable and once written, can be a beautiful testament to a loving mother’s life. This article offers up obituary samples and templates for elderly, young, and middle aged mothers as well as guidance on how to write an obituary for a mother.

How to write a mother’s obituary

While examples and templates can be helpful, it’s also important to have an understanding of the format and structure of a typical obituary before you jump into writing one. Understanding the structure and format can help you identify it when reading through sample obituaries for a mother, which will later help you customize and craft one of your own. Here’s how to write an obituary for a mother:

  1. Start with a basic introduction: Begin with her full name, age, and the date and place of her passing. You might also include a brief phrase that captures her essence, such as "a beloved mother and cherished friend" or "a devoted and compassionate woman."

  2. Highlight her family role: Describe her role as a mother and any other family roles, such as grandmother or sister. This part can include a few personal touches about her nurturing nature, dedication, or family traditions she helped create.

  3. Mention significant life events: Provide a brief summary of her life’s journey. Include her birthplace, major life milestones, education, and career highlights. You may also touch on important life experiences, such as her marriage, travels, or notable accomplishments.

  4. Celebrate her character and passions: Share details that capture her personality and passions. Mention her hobbies, interests, or talents, like gardening, cooking, or volunteering. This is a place to paint a picture of her as an individual, adding warmth and relatability.

  5. Acknowledge her impact and legacy: Speak to her influence on others—how she made people feel, her contributions to her community, or the values she instilled in her family. You might also express the legacy she leaves behind and the way she’ll be remembered.

  6. List surviving family members: Include the names of close family members she leaves behind, such as her children, grandchildren, siblings, or other loved ones. You may also wish to mention any family members who preceded her in death.

  7. Provide funeral or memorial information: If appropriate, include details about any upcoming services, including the date, time, and location. If the family prefers donations to a cause instead of flowers, mention that here. You can also include the link to the memorial website you’ve set up for a simple way to share service information.

  8. Conclude with a personal note or closing: End with a meaningful closing, like a favorite quote of hers, a simple farewell, or words of gratitude from the family. This can be a heartfelt way to leave readers with a lasting impression of her.

An obituary for a mother should reflect her warmth and individuality, painting a vivid picture of her life and the love she shared with others.

Sample obituary templates and examples for mothers

Following are some obituary examples for a mother who has passed away. These obituary samples and templates for mothers aim to bring up a few key elements: her nurturing qualities, the ways she cared for and supported her family, her role in creating cherished family traditions, her values and beliefs, and the impact she had on her community or circle of friends. Many also highlight her unique personality traits, accomplishments, and favorite activities, painting a picture of her life and the legacy she leaves behind. When reading through an example of an obituary for a mother, try to think on how you might personalize the template to fit your needs. An example obituary for a mother who passed from cancer may contain information related to how she managed the disease vs. a mother who passed away unexpectedly – so thinking of what you’d like to focus on when writing an obituary for a mother is helpful when reading through templates.

I don’t feel comfortable writing an obituary by myself. What should I do?

If writing the obituary alone feels overwhelming, here are some options to consider:

  1. Work with close family or friends: Invite others who knew your mother well to contribute. They can share memories, insights, or help with the wording, which can ease the pressure on you and add personal touches.

  2. Use AI: Maybe you’re trying to write an obituary for someone with a specific case and aren’t finding it. (For example, an obituary for a mother who died from pancreatic cancer.) AI is an excellent tool to help you come up with your own unique obituary style and content in a way that’s right for you.

  3. Seek professional help: If you’ve already read through the free obituary templates for mothers and are certain you’re not in the space to write an obituary, but want to make sure the obituary is to your liking, consider hiring a professional obituary writer.
