It’s been one year since we lost my dear friend Tracy. He was my close friend of over 40 years. I miss him and think about him almost daily and smile remembering the great times we shared. I miss you Tracy and will never forget you!

To Kaori, Miko Ann, and Maylan
I just learned of the passing of Tracy this past Sunday 8/25/24. You guys don't know me but I know you or of you.
I was part of the opening team at Windsor Court Hotel. It was because of him that I am who I am in this crazy business of Hospitality. I always refer to him as my mentor. Tracy was a passionate person about hospitality and about life in general. A good friend most importantly. In my years working with him I wanted to be like him. When tough decisions arise, I always say what would Tracy do? His intellect, his sense of urgency, his palate for wine and food. He was a master of hospitality. And of course his sartorial style. A" renaissance man".
Years later I called Tracy for advice on my career. I was then hired as the opening restaurant manager Four Seasons Hotel NYC in 1993.
Make do, get ready, put away

Kaori, Miko and Malyn: I knew Tracy and his family while we were in high school and college. Our paths took different directions and we lost touch.
You may not have known Tracy starred in many high school productions. In college he played guitar and sang Bob Dylan songs at local coffeehouses and bars while I passed the hat!
Tracy was intense and brilliant. He was extremely loyal and devoted to his friends. He read voraciously and wrote with great passion. I always assumed he would publish short stories and poems later in life.
Most importantly, I know Tracy loved and truly cherished you, his family.
It has been heartwarming to read these tributes to Tracy. He will be always in our thoughts.

My deepest condolences to Mrs. Mercer and the family.
I had the opportunity to work for Mr. Mercer as his Executive Assistant in Palo Alto. He was an amazing leader that was admired and respected by so many. His professional writing inspired me to improve my writing skills.
From our first meeting we had a connection through our French Bulldogs, his Mimolette and my Boris.

Kaori, Miko, & Malyn, I send my love & deepest condolences. Uncle Tracy was one of a kind. My favorite memories of him are from my childhood. He was so loving, fun, & full of life! He took me to The Wichita Racquet Club & to my first movie, Grease, with John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John. I got to go with my Grammy to visit him in Chicago-I was afraid of elevators & he took me to the top of Sears Tower. He said I wouldn’t be afraid anymore if I could do that. I also visited him in New Orleans, & got to meet Aunt Kaori & attend the Worlds Fair. What I will miss most are his jokes, his love of great food & music, his handsome face, & his magnetic personality. May he rest in peace. He lived an amazing life, he loved & was loved. I was lucky to be his niece.

Tracy was a mentor to me when I was in graduate school, as we explored the opening of a new hospitality concept, that operated in and gave back to the rural Andes mountains in South America. He was an advisor to our start-up. He taught me about service in hospitality, and the power of culture. He allowed me to rotate throughout different departments at the Four Seasons SV, where he was GM, I was able to participate in new hire orientation, sat in on the daily huddles, and he hosted a fundraising meeting for us at the hotel. He was kind, generous, and thoughtful; and he made a meaningful impact on me and my life.

I send my deepest condolences to the Mercer family.
Tracy was a mentor to me at the Four Seasons Boston. He taught us all so much; he was delighted with our success and he offered gentle guidance with our missteps. He brought great humor and enthusiasm to the hotel every day. He was such a pleasure to work with!
On a personal note- my sister and I traveled to Chicago and stayed at the Ritz on the employee benefit. On our last night, the hotel was oversold and they were walking people. We knew our room that night wasn’t guaranteed. Instead of asking us to leave- Tracy and his family invited us into their home for the night. I will be forever grateful for this incredibly generous gesture.
My thoughts and prayers are with your family during this difficult time.

Tracy, was truly special, we first met back in 1989, when he hired me into Four Season Hotel, Boston. We had so much fun working together, his passion, his knowledge, even when he shouted at me for "leaving the Ship" He told me, " A Captain never leaves the ship" Room Service got slammed one morning I went to help with deliveries and left the kitchen station !!! Lesson learned!
He was ahead of his time, never liked rules or policies, he loved to break and challenge them. My greatest memory was when he hosted my baby shower for my first daughter Sara. I think he felt bad after how he reacted when I told him I was pregnant. We laughed many times over that!
I know how much he loved his family and delighted to see the picture of them all and now his grandkids. May he rest in peace and look out for all of us left behind.

Tracy was an amazing manager, mentor, friend and father figure in both of our lives. We both valued his advice and knowledge during our time in Palo Alto and feel honored to have worked with him. His friendship continued and even though we didn’t get to connect often we have very fond memories. Our condolences to the Mercer family.

Kaori, Miko, and Malyn, I’m so sorry to hear this sad news.
I met Tracy at the Marunouchi Four Seasons when he was managing the hotel, and we reconnected when he started managing the property in Palo Alto, near where my wife Laura and I live. Laura and I used to go to the hotel regularly, for a drink or dinner or both, and seeing Tracy was always one of the highlights (as was a drink of his own design—the Purple Haze). If he had time, he would join us for a bit; if not, he would always say hello and leave us smiling just from the pleasure of seeing him. He seemed always delighted to be with the people around him, and his joie de vivre was impossible to resist (though why would anyone even want to try?).
Tracy was extremely generous with the hotel, too—hosting two book parties for me, providing a room for a month at a special rate so I could meet a deadline (or at least not miss it by too much), and making sure Laura and I were always taken especially well care of when we stayed at any FS property. I set a scene in one book at the hotel—a killing in the parking lot!—and Tracy got such a kick out of it that he had the “crime scene” marked in chalk. There might even have been a cameo appearance by a character who shared Tracy’s name—and his elevated sense of men’s style.
No one here gets out alive, my father used to say before proving the point himself, but some people create much more happiness than the norm. That was Tracy. I’m sad tonight that he’s gone, but I also feel blessed to have known him.

Mercer family - my deepest condolences! My thoughts and prayers are with you. I have fond memories of Tracy going back to my Ritz Chicago days, Chinzan-so (dinners at home, tennis) and in Singapore. My first lessons from him where about attire, style, dress sense, finer things in life given the brand we work for. Always grateful for all that he did for me in my career.
With love
Uday
