I once mentioned to him a favorite lobster place in Maine. I saw him a while later and he was concerned that it might have closed. I let him know it was seasonal. The whole process was very Shawn. A passing remark from an acquaintance led to research and genuine concern. He will be missed.

I knew Shawn during a nine year stay in Taiwan. I had four children at Taipei American School during that time. He was certainly a bright light at the school. He was always positive, helpful, and so full of joy! I will always remember him and know that he will be missed by so many. He made the love of his family clear and I hope they find comfort in that and can focus on the joyful times during this time of grief. ❤️

I'm so sorry to hear this. I knew Shawn briefly when I participated in the China Hash in 2009-10. I knew him as a gregarious man with an infectious smile and what seemed to be a deep well of kindness and friendliness. I knew him afterwards on social media for his love of fitness, food, and most of all, his deep love for his family. His posts brightened my days from across the world. My deepest condolences to his wife, two children, and the many family members and friends grieving his loss.

I am so sorry for your loss. Sean was truly a bright spot for me when I arrived to Taiwan. I walked into TAS and he made me feel comforted and assured me I would have a Turkey and pumpkin pie Thanksgiving! He always had a smile on his face. He will be missed!

Shawn and I were apartment-mates during, IIRC, Senior Winter in college. I will miss and have missed his FB posts, especially his those showing meals with friends and his holiday turkey work. Many years ago, the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine published a nice article about Shawn and Ellen. Much love to the O'Neal family!

Shawn was an incredible friend and just an all around great person. He was more than a friend but also a big brother. He was one of the reason I ran track and cross country in high school. He was a great competitor and inspired me the run the 800m and the 1500m. He also inspired and encouraged me in business and to follow my dreams and passion. I will miss his genuine friendship and his great smile..!! Prayers for his wife and family.

I first met Shawn more than 20 years ago, when I was a student at TAS. I remember popping into his office whenever I could to say hello. His radiant energy was infectious and always lifted you up, no matter who you were. I will miss his zest for life, sense of humour, full heart, his being. The world feels a little dimmer without his light. Sending love to everyone who was touched by Shawn; may his memory continue to be a blessing.

Had no idea Shawn was ailing. Guess his discomfort was veiled by his effervescent smile. It was a look he always had from the moment we met as freshmen at Dartmouth. We communicated regularly via Facebook, and he always had a kind word to say. This stings.

I have been lucky to know Shawn since 1984. He is without doubt one of the most positive, talented, funny and inspiring people I have ever met. I will never forget his infectious laughter.

Shawn is such a great buddy i believe for everyone who has ever met him. full of energy and positive vibes. In all kinds of ways just look up to him for the role of a big brother and host, always making sure that someone new to the place gets oriented to the venue and integrated- Even in a Mandarin-speaking country where he gets so often and so easily relegated as an outsider just because of the way he looks.
I will always look up to him and his legacy for just that homie vibe and joy he introduced to us on a world that still has borders, and bad news.
To the O’Neal family, Ellen, Brandon, and Monica: please accept my condolences and salutes. These three years- I can’t imagine how hard they were. But thank you for let us know that he has been a warrior, and shoutout to you all for being the fellow warriors and heroes you are.

Shawn was one of the kindest most positive people I have ever known. I had no idea of his battles, and am truly sorry to learn of his passing. He was a great man.

To Brandon and the rest of the family,I am shocked and saddened by the news of the death of Shawn O'Neal. I would see him at TAS when I would play basketball there and he would always have a big smile on his face. Later than that, he used to attend my pool parties and again, was always one of the most affable people in the place to be. While this is a sad time, you can take solace in the fact that he's raised some amazing kids and his spirit and energy will live with you forever. Rest in Power
