The entire ATA Engineering family is deeply saddened to learn of Richardโ€™s passing. He was a great engineer, but more than that, he was a wonderful human, and he will be sorely missed. We offer our most sincere condolences to Grace and family, and all who knew and loved him.
I am so terribly sorry for this tragic loss to you, the children, and family. I know there are no words that will help at this time, but over time I wish you comfort peace and love.
Grace and Girls,
Priscilla and I are so heartbroken over the loss of Rich. Wow, that really hurts. Please know that I treasured my time with Rich - work is work and he was a joy to work with but the really good stuff was in all the philosophical discussions about every facet of life. One of our inside jokes concerned spiritual growth. We came to the conclusion that spiritual growth will occur more frequently as a result of pain. We all have some real opportunities for growth now! We even joked about this during our last visit on March 31 when he drove into the campus to say goodbye to me right before my retirement. It was so good to talk to him...and so tragic to lose him just a few days later. Please take care and take comfort in that so many people loved him and love you and your girls too.
All our best,
Tim and Priscilla Nelson

Grace,
I am so sorry for your loss. Please accept my heartfelt condolences and prayers that you and your family will have the strength you need to get through this together. Richard was one of the finest engineers I've ever worked with: creative, industrious, and always willing to help out the team. While working together, he continually challenged me, and I am a better engineer today because of Richard. Most of all he was a dear friend and will be sorely missed.
Know that you are in my prayers every day.

Grace, Steven (my husband) and I are shocked and saddened to learn of Richardโ€™s untimely and unexpected death. We are very sorry for your loss, yet we know that you and your daughters will have strength to weather this devastation. We fondly remember the enjoyable dinner that we had years ago with the entire family โ€“ you, Richard, Emiko, Ayumi, Miya, and Kiyomi. We were so inspired by how well you and Richard gracefully and skillfully managed a busy family with four delightful daughters. Steven in particular identified with Richard not only because of similar scientific/technical careers but also because of their common love of classical music and appreciation of Asian and Western cultures. We now regret that we did not create more opportunities over the years to get to know Richard better. Life is so unfair and unpredictable!
I'm still in disbelief and am heart-broken for your loss. It's been over 11 years since I last saw Richard, but I have no doubt we all would've picked up where we left off (just like running into you, Grace, back in Sept '20). I'm here anytime you need help. All my love.
Grace and family, we are heartbroken for you. Richard's greatest legacy are his beloved girls. We loved chatting with Richard during the classroom events at LIES. It was evident that he was so proud of each of his four daughters. Callie has fond memories of Richard helping her and Kiki make slime. You are in our hearts and prayers, Genevieve, Bob, Gabrielle, and Callie Stravinski
For Grace and Richardโ€™s children, my deepest sympathies.
I went to high school with Richard and spent many hours with him and our group of friends Bernie, Gord & Stu. We would talk about planes, play games, see movies and even once wrote a play together. I was happy for him when I saw his impressive accomplishments knowing itโ€™s what he always wanted to become. A terrible loss of a good man before his time.
Grace, Emiko, Ayumi, Miya, Kiyomi โ€“ I offer my sincere condolences. I met Rich 30 years ago at Caltech, and I am forever grateful for the friendship he extended to this crazy Kiwi.

What is the most important thing in the world? It is people, it is people, it is people.

I am lost in this loss, yet wonderful memories of Rich endure and prevail. I pray that yours will comfort you always. With much love. Kia kaha.
Grace,

I am so sorry for your loss I use to work with Rich on the Orion Program when I first started at Orbital. He sat right across from me and we had many enlightening and heartfelt conversations about you and the kids. He even just sent me an email when I got back to work after I lost my daughter in Nov., there are no words I can say to make this any better I know your pain and what your going through try to stay strong.
Grace, I heard from Maureen about the passing of your husband. I am so sorry for your loss. I canโ€™t even begin to imagine what you are feeling, but please know that I am thinking of you and your girls. With caring thoughts and love, Yuhsien.
Grace and family, I'm so sorry for your loss of Rich. Rich was good man, and a good friend. We've been friends since high school and went to engineering school together. I've only ever heard people speak of him in glowing terms. He was just wonderful. He will be missed by many.
Hi Grace & Tsuyuki family! My name is Greg Walsh. I worked with Richard for several years on the Hubble SLIC program at NASA and Orbital. I used to be an Orbital guy (now NASA) but was based at NASA in Greenbelt, MD. It was our privilege to have Richard join our team and lend his expertise and his always measured, thoughtful insights. I heard always of his girls. I am so very sorry to hear this news and I wanted to pass along our deep regrets and condolences. He was such a fantastic person and such a joy to be around.
Please accept my heartfelt condolence. I had the pleasure of working with Rich over the past 25 years off and on. He was always welcoming and kind, and we enjoyed many laughs together. He will be missed.
I would like to express my condolences to you. I knew Richard for the better part of 10 years while he worked at Orbital. He was a generous, kind and fair man and will be greatly missed. The world is a better place for him having been in it and I enjoyed his quick wit and dry humor.
Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with you and each of your children.
Richard was always amazingly kind, caring, funny, a joy to be around, a loving father, and an overall good man. I will miss hearing his upbeat and cheerful voice. I know his legacy will live on through all those whose life he touched, especially his wonderful family. May God bless his soul.
"With the saints give rest, O God, to the soul of your servant where there is no pain, nor sorrow, nor any sighing, but life everlasting."
I had the privilege of working side-by-side with Richard at OSC/Orbital/Orbital ATK/Northrop Grumman for most of his 27 year career there. There has been an outpouring of sympathy for Richard's family from his colleagues as well as numerous statements of his tremendous technical abilities as an aerospace engineer. Beyond that, people have remarked at what a great person Richard was to work with and that he will be greatly missed. Juli and I express our deepest sympathies to Grace, Emi, Yumi, Miya, and Kiki.
I will never forget the judo classes we held together. Richard was a wonderful person and I still cannot believe the sad news. I always enjoyed his humor and his wit. Grace, Emi, Ayumi, Miya, Kiki, please accept my deepest condolences.
I knew Richard from Kindergarten through grade 12. I was shocked to hear of his sudden and untimely passing. Throughout school I remember Richard as being so intelligent and wise for his age, while at the same time being funny, goofy and a friend to all. He was truly a lovely person. My deepest condolences for your incredible loss. May the loving memories you have of Richard help ease this difficult time. Laura Dahl (nee Davis)
Our prayers go out to you, Grace, and the girls. We couldn't believe the news when we we heard it. As we remember Richard, we are thankful to have known him through some of our family gatherings. We remember him as a loving husband to you (even willing to live abroad for a year in a country with unfamiliar language and culture, and to have a "home delivery"; we couldn't believe he agreed), and a wonderful father to your daughters (remembering how impressed he was when one of them made him believe that she was practicing piano diligently, when in fact she was practicing "efficiently"). We are especially thankful, when Michelle went on a mission trip to Uganda, for inviting John over to your home (where Richard and John shared some personal stories from the past). We sincerely pray for comfort and strength and blessings to you and the girls in the midst of your loss. With love.
I am so sorry to hear the loss for your beloved husband. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your beautiful girls.
