We were so very sad to hear of Richard's passing. Sending love to you all. The Massa Family -- Chris, Colette, and William
I always admired Richard since our meeting in the first grade. I recall coming to school that year worried having heard some news of a meteor shower and not understanding what this meant. While on the playground at Springfield Heights Elementary School, Richard explained what a meteor shower was and that we were safe. While I have not seen Richard since grade school, he did have an impact on my life and I thought of him often over the years.

Holding all of Richard's love ones in our hearts. Sending peace and comfort.
All of us at heritage Orbital in Chandler who had the opportunity to work with Richard will miss him. He was a joy to work with and a great engineer. It is noteworthy that he was so universally liked and respected. I am deeply saddened by his tragic death and regret that I did not have the opportunity to get to know him better on a personal level. It is very clear that there was so much more to Richard outside of work that we only had a small glimpse of while working long-distance with him.
Grace,

Word cannot express my sadness to hear of Richard's passing. He was one of the kindest persons I have ever known and it was an honor to work with him.

I fondly remember that he held me responsible for his gray hair. He graciously and without complaint (to me anyway) took over the X-34 fuselage testing when I went off to have a baby. We were supposed to be done with testing before Lindsey was born - but you know how that goes. I was very grateful to know that testing was in good hands. Richard (along with Phil Larson) had it covered, though I know it wasn't easy.

The service was beautiful. What a lovely tribute to such a great man. You and your daughters were amazing. Our hearts and prayers are with you.

Fondly,
Nancy Rogers
Professor Wolfgang Knauss, Rich's advisor at Caltech had trouble with the everloved.com site. He asked that I post this on his behalf.

I am deeply sorry to learn of Richard's sudden passing. I was the advisor for his work on his Engineering Degree at Caltech (Aeronautics). He was always a capable and warm individual. Little did I know at that time that he had an extensive classical music interest, though mine was heavily constrained then because of a very heavy work load. His research was devoted to a difficult topic in the instability of structures made of time and temperature sensitive (viscoelastic) materials (including composites), which became very important in the aerospace industry where composite materials encountered elevated temperature applications. I was sorry that he chose not to continue his studies towards a PhD degree, but Richard was a very practically oriented person, who loved to see effective results. It is extremely regrettable that he died at such a young age (my father died at age 54 when I was 20, the reason, that I had to emigrate to the US).

I was just recently assembling the addresses of my former students and post-docs, and had worried bout finding Richard, when the sad news arrived.

My sorrowful thoughts are with Richard's whole family.

On behalf of the AASC team that worked closely with Richard on the Orion Launch Abort System program, we offer our deepest condolences for your loss. Rich was definitely one of the good ones, just a great human being, and we will always remember him! Thank you for letting us share him for the time he was out at our facility and working together on the Orion program! He will be sorely missed by many here!
Dearest Grace and daughters, Please allow me to offer my sincere condolences on the loss of your wonderful husband, Richard. Lily has shared many stories of your lives and how wonderful Richard was as a friend, husband, and father. Your presence and eulogy were elegant and loving. I do not know that there could ever be a better father who has lived. Thank you for sharing the celebration of his life with us via YouTube. Michelle & Tori Carpentieri

Richard was my mentor. He was kind and giving. He knew so much and all he wanted to do was share his knowledge to make the best decision possible. When we worked on the Launch Abort System, my job was to design the protective shield for the astronauts, a job I felt completely unequipped to handle. Richard took me under his wing and helped ensure that the design was safe for the astronauts even while I could not do it on my own. Richard watched me grow at Orbital, leave Orbital, and kept in touch with me even when I fell off the radar. He was my very good friend.

We chatted about topics ranging from our job to moral philosophy. He took me into his home when we worked so late that I couldn't drive the hour back to my apartment. There I met all of you, Grace, and watched your kids grow up to be amazing as well. It is with all my heart that I grieve for our loss, and I will miss him dearly.

Grace and family,We really miss Richard here at his rocket family. He was an excellent engineer, but more than that he was a man of high integrity and he held himself to high standards. This set the example for all of us to do our best. This photo shows Richard out at Vandenberg AFB in the mid-1990's where we were getting ready for the first Orbcomm launch on a Pegasus rocket. Despite having to work very long hours, you can just see Richard still has his sense of humor and is willing to be a little silly which was so great about his personality. I've also had the pleasure to work with Richard on our Antares rocket, which launches twice a year from Wallops Island carrying cargo to the space station. Richard was instrumental in helping to design and analyze the Antares rocket structures. With his help, Antares has been very successful and we've helped to keep the astronauts supplied with food, water, experiments, and other supplies since 2013. Just last year in November 2020, NASA marked the 20th anniversary of continuous occupancy of the space station by humans - quite an accomplishment that Richard played a direct role in helping achieve! I hope that Grace and Richard's daughters will take pride in Richard's accomplishments and contributions to the nation's (and the world's through the ISS partnership) space program. From here at Northrop Grumman, we miss Richard and will keep him and his family in our thoughts. With great affection,-Kurt Eberly
