Dear friends, we pray God’s blessing and comfort on your lives. May the knowledge that our dear brother is now in the presence of our Lord bring peace to your heart.
Melvin has been my prayer partner for almost 20 years. In these 2 decades we have shared our requests, our praise reports, our defeats, our victories. I have never heard him utter one bad word out of anger or malice. He never missed an opportunity to pray for people on the street, in Home Depot or on a parking lot. He truly cared for people and wanted them to be closer to Jesus. What a giant for Christ.
It is with great sorrow that we so say goodbye to Bro Melvin. It is with great joy that we celebrate his homecoming to our Savior Jesus Christ. For a man who talked, walked and worked for the Lord, we know that he is at peace. He showed up in the Smith family over the years in numerous ways. Preacher, friend, mentor, construction project worker, but most of all a constant reflector of the goodness of Jesus in all things. Now, Bro Melvin starts a new walk in heaven above.

Rev. Bro. Melvin,
Bro. Melvin was much more than a friend, he was truly like a brother from another mother to me. Some others could probably say the same. It’s not by chance, the people encountered on our life path. The question is how much love will we give to those encounters. I’m not one to question God, because I know His view is not my view. But, when it comes to losing Melvin, I’ve asked God, “Why?” The Spirit reminds me that precious are the lives of His Saints, and that He is Love, we are Loved, and Love never ends. We are forever connected through that Love, and “The Who” we really are lives on. Never forget that. The kingdom is always present and we’re just passing through this vapor of a life. All the material we leave here, but love is our only eternal contribution. That love has all the attributes of God that scripture says, and it remains here and continues to bear the fruit of the giver after they’re gone. Nothing separates us from that Love, because it’s God. The Spirit reminded me of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s life, and his impact. Bro. Melvin was another one of those impactful people. Like King, he embraced the Christlike attitude of the servant. We always want these people here, because of the love they share, and the fruit they bear. The Word says, “Love God with all your heart, soul, and mind, and love your neighbor as yourself.” I watched Melvin use his gifts to pray for, encourage, and challenge many to find God or recommit to God’s plan for their life. He was very mindful of his purpose, and was constantly communicating with God, even asking for help with job obstacles. God lives in the now, and I saw Melvin try to live his faith that way. He rarely left things that should be expressed or done now for another day or time. He was very conscientious about that, even in his work. We had many conversations about faith, life, his childhood, and all the way through to his marriage to Dewana. Months before his marriage, he described Dewana as having a sweet spirit, a powerful woman of prayer, being spiritually simpatico with him, and believed she might be his future wife. She was, and I was blessed to take their wedding photos. Melvin always looked out for me, and wanted my wife and I to move to Georgia, to help him, and use our combined skills to be a blessing in Georgia and beyond. Melvin loved Dewana, his kids, grandchildren, and many friends, including a special love for the Muckell family. He was happy and proud of his “Build and Rebuild Ministry,” and to see the ministry grow and bear fruit. He was pleased with the work and commitment of Bro. Paul, both Brothers Al, Bro. Reggie, Elder Craig, Pastor Pace, Sis. Rosie, and all those who have or continue to invest their time and talents into prison ministry and helping to mentor and rebuild the lives of men. God allowed Melvin to see some of the fruits of his labor, and he was grateful and thanked God for it. For someone who loved much and invested so much of himself into each life he touched, there’s a huge hole left in the hearts of those Melvin left to continue the work of being a light in this world. Let’s be God’s children of light and purpose and do the work of ministry. I’ll miss our conversations and Rev. Bro. Melvin’s presence greatly, but will remember his many lessons, and know the love shared between us remains and will be ever present in my life. God’s Blessings to All!
We are so saddened by the death of our beloved Bro. Melvin. He was a man that taught us how to minister to the least of these. He taught me how to seek the Lord with all my heart, soul and mind. He pounded in my to head to live a righteous and holy life before the Lord. He shared the gospel unashamedly and for this I truly loved him. He demonstrated and trusted the Lord for his provision to take care of those he loved. His relentless love for his children, grandchildren and wife was something to marvel. I’ll miss him and cherish the memories of him, and laugh out loud as I hear in my head him shouting “Hey Glory”

I will continue to live a life that makes you proud.
