Good evening,

Paula and I learned that we were cousins through Ancestry.com. I've been a member of Ancestry.com  forever and was surprised when she reached out to me and asked if I would be willing to explore how we are related. I couldn't believe that some long lost family member had finally contacted me. After several emails and or text messages, we finally made arrangments to talk on January 4, 2019 if I recall correctly.

Talking with Paula was like catching up with a friend that I have always known but just had not spoken to in a while. I enjoyed our conversation and looked forward to meeting her in person to learn more about the relatives she and I shared. I was looking forward to visiting her in person and getting some personal training as well as her advice on caring for my bad shoulder. Our conversation motivated me to keep on searching for our shared ancestors.  We ended our conversation with me declaring that the next time we spoke, I would have identified exactly how we were related. With that goal in mind, and wanting to make good on my promise, I hesitated to call her until I had more details. None of the names of any of my relatives that I inquired about were familiar to her.

As time went on, I came to realize that their names were not familiar to Paula because they were all from my maternal/mother's side of the family. I had no names from my paternal/father's side to suggest to Paula. When I realized that Paula and I are actually related through my father's side of the family, I was ecstatic to finally make that call to her.  I can't remember how I learned that the cell number was no longer her number, I just remember that I decided to Google her name. I was stunned to learn of her death. This was a cousin relationship and a possible friendship that I was so looking forward to. Paula turned out to be the first and only family member I have ever known and ever had a conversation with from my father's side of the family. What a cousin! What a cousin! Being a cousin was important enough to her to reach out and want to know me. I cherish her taking the time to reach out to me and will always cherish her memory.

Greetings Funmilayo! *I feel like I am stumbling through this Ancestry process. I get so tied- up with work (I am a personal trainer for a private Women-only studio & our clients are all older...late 40’s, 50s, 60s, 70s & 80s! And I am constantly doing continuing education. I help clients with knee & hip replacement, bad knees, bad backs, rotator cuff issues, plantar fasciitis, etc. Clients on diabetic & high blood pressure meds come off medication because we have a nutritionist on staff.

I went to high school with Paula and we did sports together.  We were in the gym practicing  the high jump.  She flew over the bar like an eagle.  I always hit the bar.  Coach yelled “you need to jump like Paula”.  I said “Coach Paula has springs in her legs.  No way to jump like Paula!”  Coach laugh and said “jump like Paula”.  I laughed and hit the bar.  Paula was amazing and kind and a great friend.  I miss her everyday.
One winter night we went with Paula & a group of friends to Centennial Park to ice skate. We decided not to skate, so we walked together to get a bite to eat. There were barricades up in the park & Paul proceeded to hurtle one. She put on quite a show for us. It certainty was a great night of laughs and warm memories in the ATL !

Paula was the fresh face of joy every time I saw her. She encouraged others in word as well as deed. We laughed over moving furniture into her home, clapped joyfully at Christmas programs and prayed together in public while enjoying her birthday meal 😇She touched my heart and soul and was such an inspiration as a woman, a trainer, a Christian and world class athlete. She had every accomplishment to be proud but she remained humbled and thanking the Lord for her talents!! She was one of a kind...a gold medalist in life. Looking forward to hugging her in heaven. Miss you Paula❤️
I am so sorry to hear of Paula's passing. I didn't know her personally, just that she was one of the famed Olympians from Gar-Field high school. As a former Prince William County high school athlete who was striving for the Olympics myself, I idolized and felt a kinship with anyone close to home who had managed to accomplish it. I want your family to know that Paula was an inspiration to kids she had no idea existed and her legacy reached far beyond the people who knew her personally. My heart goes out to your family and may you all find meaning, connection, and peace during this fragile time.
My sister and I went to high school with her in 1976. My Sister Kathy Connors ran with her in track.
I remember being glued to the TV watching Paula do her thing during the Olympics. I bet you can jump alot higher now in Heaven. You are a school hero.
Wow! She was our personal trainer in Ga for a long time before moving to Florida. What a beautiful woman..our prayers are with you all.
I am so sorry for your loss. I was lucky enough to recruit Paula for the University of Maryland and to coach her in the high jump. Besides being one of the greatest track athletes to ever compete for the university she was also an exceptional person. She will always hold a special place in my heart.

Paula is a tenant of mine and I knew her more than 4 yrs. My husband and I used to visit her sometimes and so amazed by her organization habits, inner beauty and positive nature. Onetime She mentioned her fav song is 'reckless love ' and she sang through the entire song for me. So wonderful and still resonates with me. She will live in our memories until end of our times.

Paula was the first Personal Trainer I worked with at the LA Fitness in Douglasville GA. She was always pushing me to new limits and we even created programming to see how far I could go. I will never forget the lessons she taught me. She was world class in many aspects and always had a smile on her face. She was an amazing person.

Paula & I shared a great love for the Lord Jesus Christ. She was truly my Sister & Friend in Christ.

We also shared a love for dancing, great music, fitness, working out together, & working together.

I will always remember the Saturday nights of pizza, Christian movies, & talking until the wee hours of the morning.

Paula always made me smile & she came along to be my friend when I most needed a friend.

I know she is in Heaven & I can almost hear her say, “you’re going to love it here!”
