I was just looking up Dr. Heaney's phone number for someone, like me, who is at her wits end trying to get a diagnosis when I discovered his passing.  Dr. Heaney was the only Dr. who listened carefully and sincerely to my symptoms.  Although we only had virtual visits I will miss him. The world has lost a wonderful and caring  physician.  My condolences to his family.
My most sincere condolences. I am very sorry for your loss and for all of us loosing Mark. His kindness and his commitment to patients, students and co-workers was immense. He will be greatly missed.
Mark was always ready to help the ECD Global Alliance in any way possible.  Even before he served as Medical Advisory Board Chairman, he consistently shared creative solutions and ideas that were practical and effective for the community. He made a difference in so many lives and the impact of his contributions will live on forever. His humble and kind nature made him an absolute joy to work with and we considered him a friend. He will be greatly missed. My sincerest condolences to the family.

I met Mark in 2018 when doctors were trying to figure out my disease, and I needed a second opinion. His calm demeanor, comforting voice, and gracious attitude instantly put me at ease. It was a very difficult time for me (I was 28 and was getting diagnosed with cancer), but I was able to feel hope after talking to him.

We grew closer over the years as we actively served on the ECD Global Alliance board. He insisted on my calling him "Mark" instead of "Dr. Heaney," but I never got around to calling him that.

His untimely death is a huge loss for everyone that knew him. Thank you, Mark, for everything you did for your patients. You were a great doctor and a greater human being. You will be missed.
I met Dr. Heaney when I was 28, after my diagnosis of CML. That was 27 years ago. I was scared and felt hopeless and Dr. Heaney gave me hope. He supported me throughout my cancer journey and when he left Sloan Kettering I followed him to  Columbia. I probably would've followed him across the country. He was such a unique individual as a person and as a doctor. Whenever anything went wrong with me medically he was the first person I called. There is nobody I would trust more than him. I was heartbroken to hear of his passing. Rest in peace Dr. Heaney you'll be missed.

I am so sad to hear of Dr. Heaney's passing.  During my time working with him at Lawrence Cancer Center, I saw a smart physician, who gave off vibes of kindness and gentleness.  Rest in peace Dr. Heaney: you will be dearly missed.      RANEE

I was saddened  when I heard the news of Mark's passing.   Working with him , in the cancer center was pleasure and I learned so much.  He was a kind and gentle person and was respected by the staff and his patients,  He will be missed by all.  Rest in peace Mark you will not be forgotten.

Although the family is suffering incredibly, I want to say that - Dr. Heaney, you were incredible and such a wonderful person inside and out. You had a special gift that I haven’t seen before. You were a great person, colleague, and friend, and I will miss you dearly. You had a gift. Unmeasurable by anyone. I feel privileged to have worked with you and you will be dearly missed. Rest In Peace my friend. Love  always,

JoAnne Torchia,RN

My sincere condolences and prayers to Mark’s family and all who loved him.  It was an honor and privilege  to work with him. ❤️
I met Dr Heaney after over a year of severe complications due to mast cell disorder. I traveled 5 hours leaving my home for the first time in 3 months scared, ill and unsure what to expect. In came this man , fully garbed due to Covid. The first thing I noticed was the kindness in his eyes. He sat behind his mask and face shield and pulled out a typed synopsis of my medical records. He thoroughly explained his diagnosis and care plan and for the first time in years I felt safe, heard and understood. I was extremely saddened to learn of his passing and my thoughts went immediately to his family, friends, colleagues, and patients - many much sicker than me, who he has taken such great care of. He not only was a brilliant, compassionate physician but also an expert listener who could without a doubt reassure you of the best treatment putting your fears to rest. My heartfelt condolences go out to his wife, children , family, staff, colleagues and patients. His level of expertise and compassion was unparalleled. He will be deeply missed by his patients, myself included, whose lives were made better because of his presence.
