Dear Tone, Thomas, Kristin, and Katie and all the Heaney & Lindgren Families,
You have all been in our prayers and thoughts. Reading all the wonderful things that friends and patients are saying about Mark, only reaffirmed for us what a wonderful husband, father, and man he was. He truly made a contribution and touched so many lives while he was on this Earth. God watch over him and his family always. Love, Margaret, Greg, Emily and Matthew Mills.
p.s. I still use his recipe for shrimp marinade and for that BBQ flank steak---- I will always think of our good times when I use it! XOXOXO

Dear Tone, Thomas, Kristin, and Katie, and Gretta, Peter, Heaney & Lindgren Families,
We are thinking of you and hoping good memories comfort you. We are so sorry and saddened about Mark, whom we met at Erdheim-Chester Disease Global Alliance Conferences in Milan, Italy, and New York, NY. We remember Mark as very kind, compassionate, knowledgeable, when we talked with him at Conferences, We are thankful for Mark's excellent Chairperson with ECD Global Alliance. In 2002, Joel was diagnosed with ECD (no known cause, no medical treatment, no cure, & 2-year life expectancy.) In 2015, Joel & Susan participated with NIH two-year clinical trial for ECD cure. Joel courageously continues to survive ECD for 20 years. Our thoughts & prayers are with you.
Warmest Thoughts,
Joel Hayashida & Susan Lew

Dr. Heaney was a kind, caring healer who had the ability to instill complete trust, hope and peace in those who were lucky enough to have him as their physician. His passing is such a profound loss not only to us but to all of those for whom he changed life itself. Godspeed, Dr. Heaney!

First, my condolences to Mark’s family and colleagues. I found out 9/15 with a shocking letter from Columbia. I had been a patient of Dr. Heaney since 2006. All the memories and condolences share and identify his wonderful humanity as well as his outstanding skill as a clinician and researcher. In Yiddish, he would be described as a “mensch”, a man with integrity and innate decency. I always felt fortunate to have him as my doctor. His death is an indescribable loss to so many. The visits to him were always fraught with my anxiety about how I was doing-his manner and being were reassuring , frank, humane and infused with warmth. I grieve along with everyone else who knew him. His loss is felt deeply and profoundly. I will cherish his words, wisdom, perspective and kindness.

I am so saddened to hear about the passing of Dr. Heaney. He treated my father for Systemic Mastocytosis. We will forever be grateful for his knowledge, support and presence. He was the most caring and respectful doctor I have ever come across. Thanks to him, my father lived 5 years with his SM diagnosis. We are forever indebted to his support during the tough times of my father’s illness. Sending my condolences to his family ❤️

I met Dr. Heaney in late December 2001 during the lowest point of my life. I had just been diagnosed with leukemia and as a husband and father of two young girls I was devastated that I was entering the final days of my life and wouldn’t be available to guide and support my loving family through critical years of development and growth. My first meeting with Dr. Heaney was at MSK hospital. The hospital is world renowned for excellent cancer care and that’s what drew me to their care. The first meeting/consultation with Dr. Heaney may have lasted an hour and a half or two. I can’t really be sure of the exact duration, but I do know, if I needed the time, it could have been six hours. Dr. Heaney listened, reassured, and developed a treatment plan. And it brings tears to my eyes today when I remember him telling me – “you’re going to be okay, the type of leukemia you have is highly treatable”. I have chronic hairy cell leukemia. Through the years Dr. Heaney has been my lifeline. I enjoyed my appointments with him because fear is hard to let go of but when a world class doctor is at your side and gives you good news its life changing. Dr. Heaney left the World Class cancer center, MSK, and brought his talents with Columbia University Hospital – I followed Dr. Heaney. Twenty plus years later I’m “doing okay” just as he promised. He was a life changing person and I’m sure stories like mine can be told by hundreds of people.
To his wife, children, and all his family, I’m praying for your comfort and sincerely thank you for sharing such a kind and talented man.

After years of pain and going to different doctors, I finally met Dr Mark , the first time I met him I was crying scared & shaking but he comforted and made me feel better with his empathy, and told me don’t worry we’ll found out what’s going with you and help you to get better and he just listened to me and never rushed me out from the room!! In 2018, Mark and Katie joined myself and my son Jack and some other friends and neighbors on a medical service trip to a rural village in the Dominican Republic. We lived a week in the village and screened and treated hundreds of people from the local villages as well as working with local doctors and nurses. Mark loved the trip and he especially loved doing basic medicine. I personally treasure that time with Mark. We walked and talked for hours about medicine, the DR and our mission. It was a great week that I got to enjoy with Mark. I will miss him. He was great. The posted pictures are from that trip.
