I am truly shocked and saddened to have just recently learned of Dr. Hanway’s passing. He really was a wonderful doctor—I have nothing but fond memories of him throughout my scoliosis treatment! Dr. Hanway was so incredibly kind and helpful to my family and I as we navigated a challenging time in my young life, almost 20 years ago. Even as I’m about to turn 30 years old, I still remember how he made things much easier to understand and overcome. I am forever grateful to have been one of his patients! My life would have been very different had I not received such excellent care. I hope his family has found comfort in knowing that he made a difference in the lives of many. May he rest in peace.  Sending my deepest condolences to all. ❤️

Dear Dr. Hanway,

I cant believe it’s already been 5 years since we’ve (people who knew him) known him. I’ve missed you more than words can be explained, Dr. Hanway. Every time i go to Children’s National Hospital or replace praying with mediation for my loss loved ones - i think of you so often. Whenever I replace praying with meditation, I always pray for you and my other loss loved ones that I knew (no matter how well I knew them 🥺) and idk how to explain the feelings i get whenever praying for them. I still can’t believe it was a long time since my parents and I didn’t see you, since your unexpected death happened 🥺🥺🥺 and we didn’t find out til sometime in 2019 (if I remember correctly) 😢🥺

Dr. Tosi told me that you did great with the surgeries in my childhood, and you really did! I will get the figure 8 out sometime this summer (I think) since they bother me whenever you pressed on them. Heard it’s an easy surgery from other XLH patients that are also on that Facebook group :) Dr. Hanway, thank you so much for taking great care of me, from the bottom of my heart!!!

Dr. Hanway, I will continue to pray for you and your family. I know you are proud of your kids, your wife, and everyone else from the bottom of my ❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏 I learned to believe in God, to have a relationship with God, learned how to pray to Him, etc. And I will continue to grow my relationship with him!!!

This past March 9, it was a hard day for me because of your passing from 3/9/18 🥺🥺

As the years pass the memories of you are oh so near and dear.  Some days are still quite hard to get through but then a silly memory will help me to pick myself up and carry on.  You touched so many lives in so many ways!  Many very purposefully and others without you even knowing.  You are an inspiration and I hope to have a life that others will marvel at in even a small way like so many have shared about you!  Your kids are such a joy to watch in carrying on your legacy.  You would be so proud!  You are my angel!  We miss you!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I am grateful for Jeff's big smile, great energy, and deep impact on the people around him, especially his beautiful family.

On this anniversary of losing him, I am thinking of you all, Hanway family, and saying a prayer.

Dear Jeff,

The years since your passing are beginning to stack up. But the beautiful memories of you live fresh in my heart and mind. You are still missed and loved.

I love you brother,

Geoff

Another year has passed and while life goes on , people who touched our lives are always remembered.  It's an honor to stop and pause and remember Dr. Hanway who I know is smiling down from Heaven.  Stephen is still thriving though he had a tough year medically.  Caroline had a bad leg fracture a year ago after falling off a horse.  It would have been you we would have gone to for her treatment, but know she was in good hands and is back in the saddle.  Keep watching over all your patients.   You made a difference.
As so many others have said over the years, Jeff had a way of making me feel seen, encouraged, and valued. Everytime I saw him at church, he seemed excited to see me and talked to me like he had all the time in the world to catch up. I’m so grateful to have known him. Much love to all the Hanways today. Praying for you all. Big love.
Dear Jeff-we think of you a lot, and I always envision that great smile of yours! Happy birthday, forever a great day to remember you.

Another year has passed and your memory still lives on with my kids.  They see Dr. Tosi for bone health and you and that hardware you placed in Stephen's spine still comes up and allowed him to travel all the way to the Smokey Mountains! Caroline graduated and has a horse!  After a recent fall, she is getting great treatment for her fractured tibia, but we do miss you.  You would still hate her shoes! Thank you for the great foundation you gave to them!
Jeff, you are missed by everyone.  Your family is so wonderful and accomplished, they are all on good trajectories thanks to your and Libby's (ongoing) parenting.
Today is a good day to reflect on the beautiful person that Jeff was and all the good that he did in the world while he was here with us. You leave a massive hole in the hearts of those you touched my brother. I miss you terribly.
I love you,
Geoff

Happy Heavenly birthday Dr. Hanway!
You’d be so proud to see our Stephen sit up and hold his head up in the beach wheelchair while we are here in the Outer Banks. Caroline finally graduated from her back brace now that her curve that you had started monitoring stopped progressing. We think of you in moments like this all the time as they live lives that you had a hand in. You still wouldn’t be happy with Caroline‘s shoes! 😁
Dear Dr. Hanway,

Each time I take Annika to visit the doctor's at children's hospital we both remember you a lot and miss your presence, you were a wonderful person, always smiling.

Dear Jeff -- we feel your presence often and love watching your children grow. They surely make you so proud...as does beautiful Libby who is dedicated to caring for the world in these pandemic times. Our fondness always, Suzanne and Glenn

Happy 60th birthday Jeff.
I just had the great pleasure of spending a week with Libby at our summer cottage in North Zealand. We talked lots about you -- your ears must have been glowing! I think of you very often, lLittle things, like your voice, the loving way you regarded Libby coming down the stairs at your house, your kindness, your laugh. You are terribly missed,
Much love

Time sure does fly and life goes on. Often Dr. Hanway comes up in conversation when one has two kids who were his patients. My son Stephen had his major spinal fusion 10 years ago this past January and bilateral hamstring surgery 9 years ago.... he is quite a complex patient with disabilities and a rare disease and we never take for granted how Stephen's quality of life improved thanks to Dr. Hanway's courage to take him as a patient and his amazing expertise in correcting his spine and legs. Stephen lives a great life thanks to Dr. Hanway. My daughter will graduate from her brace this year and high school and continue riding horses thanks to his help with her as well. Just as he made the most of life and laughed, so do we. ‘All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.’ – Gandalf the Grey

Was a fellow at TSRH one year ahead of Jeff. We would connect at a few POSNA meetings and invariably bike together, notably Salt Lake and Boston.
Always enjoyed his smile and chattiness. Still shocking- great guy.
Happy birthday in heaven to my medical school classmate and friend, Jeff. I can't believe it has been two years since he left us. So much has changed in the world since he went back to God, and I know he would have so much to say about it! He would be thoughtful, quick-witted, respectful of differences of opinion, but an absolute truth teller. His balanced view of life was one of his greatest strengths. Our loss is heaven's gain! Much love to Libby and the Hanway children today.
Libby, With all of the pandemic going on, Laura Moylan and I were reflecting about how you would be a trusted information source with all the different perspectives floating about. My guess is that you are in the thick of this. I pray for your safety and health. I can't believe your beloved husband has been gone for two years. I trust you are clinging to Jesus and your family and pressing on.

I would love to catch up with you, I pray the Lord is holding you and your precious family close. Much love, Ann McGee Green
