Dear Avera,
My heart is broken for you! I will always cherish the last memory of
I have of Harvey when I saw him @ after our AOA performance last year. He looked robust, and so happy. A real treat! David & I send

I am Alan Diamond, Harvey’s brother.

Harvey was a dear, kind and truly gentle spirit. We grew up as brothers in a bit of a non traditional, brotherly relationship. Our father died when I was 10, and Harvey was 22. He was finishing (or finished) college, married and moved to LA. I was a kid, wrestling with a dysfunctional stepfather, and Harvey was starting his new life, family and career. We saw each other sporadically during those years, and it was really as adults that our relationship deepened. Throughout my life, though, he was always the father figure I needed and longed for.

As the stand in father, on a trip to LA, at about age 12, Harvey was the one who told me the “facts of life.” He had notes written in his precise, left handed pen, going from point to point, ignoring my incredulous looks. Straight forward and clear in his delivery…as he was to the end.

I spent several 2 week trips to California with my friend, Ivan, in my teens. We would drive Harvey to work, take the car and drive all over LA, from Pasadena to Laguna. We would pick up Harvey from work, go home & Harvey would either boil a chicken (really…boil a chicken)? or go out to eat. Wonderful times together!

In the ’90’s, we lived in NYC and Harvey, and often Avra, would come out to New York for the Toy Fair and stay with us in our Upper West Side apartment. Again, wonderful experiences together!

Harvey deeply loved Avra, and talked about her often. He dearly loved his children, Lynn, Julie, Jeremy and Adam and all of his grandchildren and extended family. He was a proud and loving husband, father and grandfather, friend and brother to Carl and me.

Harvey was tender and stern… strong and mild… opinionated…..yet sometimes wonderfully naive. He was meticulous in all things: his writing, his dress (Harvey Shirt!), his personal grooming, and I’m sure in his work. He and Avra were world travelers, loving the adventure of a new country. He was adaptable, compassionate, easy going, clever, considerate, diligent, gregarious, frank, reliable, and persistent.

Harvey loved us and we loved him. His life was a blessing to us all.

Rest in peace, dear brother.

Alan Diamond

So very sorry to hear of Harvey's passing! When my children and Lynn's were young we shared time together and I always so admired his gentleness, kindness and loving relationship with his children and grandchildren. He was a lovely man and I am sure will be so missed by his entire family. We send our condolences to all of the family. Much love- Rhonda, Loren, and Zach Sokolow
We're so very sorry to hear of Harvey's passing. Although we didn't know him much more than a couple of recent years, we got a clear impression of him: He was a happy guy who did his best to make everyone around him -- and himself -- as content as they could be. We'll miss playing board games as well as enjoying dinners and desserts with Harvey and his lovely, caring wife, Avra. (It was tough to beat him at Rummikub, by the way; he was almost always the undefeated champ). The relative brief time we knew this sensitive man leaves us with little more to say at this sad moment. Brevity notwithstanding, we surely hope that in these words our caring for Harvey has resounded clearly. As we're certain is the case for so many others, Nancy and I will sincerely miss the spirit and presence of Harvey in our lives. Our deepest condolences to you, Avra. From Joe/Nancy Gennaro.
I am forever grateful for the warm bond of friendship and community that I was honored to share with Harvey & Avra for many years as their rabbi at CTJ. They are both wonderful people and I join Avra, their family, and our community in mourning the passing of a real Zeise Neshama, a truly Sweet Soul. May his memory be a blessing always.

Please do not hesitate to be in touch if I can support or help out in anyway at this difficult time.

Rabbi Mark Hyman
My Saturday morning beach runs will not be the same without a Harvey wave. He and his smile will be missed.

To Avra and Family Members:

We know we all face the end of life;  yet when it happens to someone with whom we share close family, it brings home the point with great force and clarity. Harvey was one of those people in my life. Because of my familial ties to his daughters, I felt the closeness which comes with shared membership in an extended family.

What did I learn from that shared membership? Here was a man who had worthy goals and could plan logical paths to reach those goals. He was honorable and trustworthy as he treaded those paths. He treaded softly, treating others with respect and dignity. He earned my respect and I enjoyed his sense of humor. This picture of Harvey is a composite of the feelings and memories I have of the man.

Memories are what it is all about now. May the memories each of you has of shared moments, whether in childhood or through later life, of the laughter and tears as you think of the interaction you had, keep him alive in your minds and in the minds of the others with whom you exchange such tales.

May those memories sustain you at this time and may they be for a blessing. Y’hi zichro livracha.

I always loved to come into the gym and see Harvey waiting at the front desk. He was always so pleasant and kind always a delight to talk to. He was like a beacon of light. He will be sorely missed.

We have so many wonderful memories of time spent with dear Harvey: films at the South Bay Film Society, where we always tried to sit together, trips up to the Fountain Theatre, for which dear, sweet Harvey was always willing to do the nerve-wracking driving, and days spent at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Harvey had a lively interest in the arts and travel and was eager to go out to new events. We will miss his gentle presence forever.
