Jeffrey Koshel and his four siblings plus parents lived in the building next to us. Though it had cinderblock walls and linoleum floors, it was new and clean. However, I missed living with my grandparents and our backyard.
We made friends with kids from apartments on our floor, including a friend of Eddie’s (Jackie Washington) who was as mischievous as he was. One day as we played outside in front of our apartment building, fire engines showed up making a racket. Neighbors congregated. And lo and behold, five year old Eddie had been hoisted on his friend’s shoulders and pulled the fire alarm. They both had a stern reprimand by the firemen, but luckily no large fine was given to my parents.

When I was 5 1/2 and Eddie was 3 1/2 we moved away from our grandparents house on 2 36th St. to a brand new Laura middle income project about five or so miles away

Eddie, Marlene and I would spend hours playing Shaggy, Jimmy and Marie. Marlene was the mother, I was Marie and Eddie was Jimmy. Our Imaginary dog shaggy was a stuffed animal.

We would let our parents sleep in on Saturday morning . Eddie and I watched cartoons and probably the test pattern before they went on. I made stacks of peanut butter and jelly or cream cheese and jelly piles of Ritz cracker sandwiches. We would snuggle on the couch or on the floor closer to our tiny TV set.
