I traveled to Costa Rica with David for work at the end of the year in 2019. While we were there David talked to me about how much he loved sloths and that they were his favorite animal. And there was this nearby zoo an hour or more away from where we were working. So we all decided to go to this zoo to see if there were Sloths there. David was in a really bad mood. Work was really hard and things were frustrating, and honestly, I think he just wasn't having a good day that day. We got to the zoo and he hardly even wanted to go in... until, we found out that they actually had several sloths. They kept them in this large enclosure (a giant cage) with lots of trees for them to hang from. And we were worried because we got to the zoo late and weren't sure if the enclosure was going to be open anymore. When we got there they were closing down the enclosure, so a few of us told the zookeepers that we had come all the way from America and that this was David's favorite animal and... then... lol... we offered to pay them an extra large tip to let us in the cage to see the sloths. Only in Costa Rica, a magical place! THEY ACCEPTED! And we went back and told David we could get into the cage and see the sloths up close, you would have thought that he was a different person. So happy, so joyful. Like a kid that had been told he could have ice cream. The zookeeper was even kind enough to let David pet the sloths. Worth every penny of that tip! While he was petting the sloth, he had the biggest smile I had ever seen from David in his entire life. This was the only time I ever saw David cry tears of joy. I watched him in that day go from the most upset person in the car to the happiest person I have ever known. He called it, at that time, the best day of his life. I know David had many better days after that, but I will never forget the emotion he shared in that moment and the joy we shared in together. I deeply miss my friend. I am saddened beyond description that I will never get to share more moments like this one with David. Now, I share it with all of you to know that David was special. He was kind and full of emotion, despite the very proper exterior he sometimes presented to others. That trip in Costa Rica will stay with me for the rest of my life as the best work trip I ever had. But it was only the best because I got to spend it with David. My life is better because he was in it. RIP David.
