I'm so sorry for your family's loss.
Deepest sympathies for your loss. I did not know Dan personally but his writing and love for all things Philly and quirky gave me a new found appreciation for my adopted home town. His curiosity and the joy he found in the world were infectious and are things I want to try to emulate. Rest in Peace, Dan.
My deepest condolences to the family. I was stunned to hear the news last week. We followed each other on twitter during its heyday and I always considered it a badge of honor to get a like or message from Dan. He so thoroughly had his finger on the pulse of the city and its nuances, his writing was must read. Deeply saddened by his passing but his legacy of kindness and humor is one we can all strive to live by, rest in peace.

Dan was one of my best friends in high school.  I deeply respected his knowledge, intelligence, kindness and humor.  The world lost a great person.
Dan didn't know me, but I knew him, because I read what he wrote, and his essence manifested itself through his words.  I'm sorry for your loss.
I never had the honor of meeting Dan but wholeheartedly enjoyed his writing.  Sincerest condolences.
Condolences and love from Kim's daughter Raina and her partner Matt, a longtime Defector subscriber
Though his beautiful writing, I loved Mr. McQuade a great deal. I am sorry for your loss, and I hope my contribution is but a tiny drop in a grand bucket of support.
I only knew Dan from Defector/Deadspin. He was a wonderful writer who had his unique voice, and had the hair of an Asgardian god. From his stories about malls, boardwalk t-shirts, cats, and Philly sports teams I knew I was reading a piece about someone who was really invested in these topics. He will be missed.
It was always so fun whenever Dan would write something about the place we both grew up. Best wishes to his family.
Very sorry for your loss, Dan was an excellent writer and brought joy to so many.

To Dan’s Family, I learned of Dan’s passing through my daughter, Clare Perretta, one of Dan’s former Quizzo teammates.  According to Clare, Dan was a gifted writer, an avid and formidable teammate, and all around great guy.  May your hearts be lightened by the fact  that many people you don’t even know mourn the loss of a fine husband, father, son, man.

Jill Perretta

Dan was a tremendous writer with a genuine love for the absurdities around him that came through so clearly in his words. As a Philadelphian myself, I could think of no greater ambassador for our lovably weird city. Go Birds and rest in peace, Dan. To Jan and Simon, I offer my heartfelt condolences.

Long time/first time. Always enjoyed his writing and podcast appearances and appreciated his zeal for sneakers and trashy T-Shirts. Philadelphia gets a deserved reputation for being a city of sports cranks, but from my experience visiting, it's also (surprisingly) a community of genuinely friendly, decent people.

Some of the best people I know are from Philly and while I didn't know Dan personally, what I know of him from his writing and how lived his life (his volunteer work at safe injection sites, for instance) seems to fit that observation.

If there's a heaven, I'm sure he's in it and probably scowling down at the Eagles offseason maneuvers. RIP. 43 is too fucking young.

Sending you my sincerest condolences during this trying time.  Dan's memory will live on through you, and through people like me who loved reading everything he wrote.

Go Phils...

So deeply sorry for your loss, and very grateful to Dan for sharing his gifts with the  world.
From a fan at Defector. Dans eternal optimism and ever present joy for life will be missed. May his spirit live on and guide your family for ever.
I did not know Dan, but he affected my life in a real and meaningful way with his writing.   I am so sorry for your loss, but please know that he will not be forgotten and that there are total strangers out there who will still think fondly of him all the time. What a cool, beautiful, and totally original guy.
Only knew Dan by his writing at Deadspin/Defector but what a legacy. Condolences to his family and loved ones.
I'm your mom's old chum from near Boston.  The Cohen family remains dear in my heart and I'm so sorry for your heartbreaking loss.  I've read some of his stuff.  Dan was one cool dude!
I never met him, but I lived in Philly for over a decade and my mom is from Havertown, and Dan was a true Philadelphian who represented this wonderful city perfectly. He was a great writer, and I wouldn't have survived the Eagles 2023 season without his funny and intuitive writing on Defector. Our condolences to you and your family. May his memory be a blessing.

Jan, Simon and family...

We are very saddened for you and all those who cared so much and loved Dan.

Holding you close in our thoughts.

Robin and Jane

Dan was the best and will be greatly missed. Much love to Jan and Simon.
