A very sad day indeed on hearing of Byron's passing. He was always a joy to work with at NWS with a smile and a laugh, a tee hee, giggle giggle, hee heee. whisper, whisper, laugh. He always made awesome ribs and I remember at one office party when my boys were maybe 3 or 4 years old, and they had ribs in each hand with a face full of sauce. Byron saw them and just laughed and laughed and laughed.
One story about Byron worth sharing. It happened at the old Stapleton NWS weather office in the early 1990s. Byron was on a mid shift and was dallying in the morning before leaving the office. Booda, Kyle and I took matters into our hands to help expedite his departure from the premises and get him to sleep after I taxing night shift. I will admit I instigated the affair. Byron was by the back door of the office and I shouted, "get him", then we all three charged him. It was of little surprise that Booda and Kyle were ahead of me in pursuit. Booda was surprisingly quick and athletic for the "brick" of a man he was. He was running balls-out after Byron and hit a slight depression in the asphalt. It threw his rhythm off just enough and he spent a good 4 to 5 steps trying to recover before he ate the pavement. The aftermath was terrible as Gary looked like he was a fierce street fight; face, elbows and knees all inflicted. His pants were torn and there was a good deal of blood. Of the incident, both Byron and I had to laugh thinking about what if someone saw these three white guys chasing this black man out of a federal building with intend of, "getting him". To this day, Kyle and I will say, "that is something you don't see every day". I guess you had to be there - weather weenies are an interesting lot. All of us who knew Byron and Dan L. too, loved those guys. It is difficult now that they are gone. One other thing, Byron always had time and gave of himself for kids. He had a huge heart.

I am so sad to hear this news. I really enjoyed working with Byron, and am thankful that I got to see him recently at one of our other co-worker's funeral service. Byron had a contagious laugh and always brought a smile to my face. When working, I enjoyed playing computer golf a lot with him (which we weren't supposed to do). It was a good way to pass the time on a slow shift. I know he will be missed by all of the people who worked with him at the National Weather Service. I hope and pray that you, Byron's family, will get through this and that you support each other in this sad time. Best wishes and deepest condolences.

This is a shock. Byron was great to work with, always had a big smile and infectious laugh. He will be missed.

I am very sad to hear about Byron. He as one of the first guys I worked with as a volunteer student intern back in 89. He recommended me for the forecaster position when I bid on the job back here in Denver in 95. I enjoyed watching him work with the kids and school talks and teach them about weather. He was never that far removed from acting like a kid himself. He/we loved those ribs, and he sure liked ribbing his co-workers! Never a dull moment when he was around, we were family. I know he loved his family, great person and great friend. You will be greatly missed...I was thinking of you when the Chiefs/Chefs won the Super Bowl! Godspeed Byron.
So sorry to hear of Byron's passing. Worked with him at WSFO Denver from June 1979 until I retired in 2001. Lots of fun and joy with him during that time. When we both lived in Aurora, visited at each other's homes usually to play chess.

Byron had a very infectious laugh and could raise the spirits of anyone when he arrived at a meeting or party.

Deepest condolences to Khalilah and Vanessa. Hope he did not suffer before his demise. Best wishes to you and the rest of your surviving family. I agree with all the previous comments that he will be deeply missed.

BTW, remember the same story that Dave Barjenbruch posted.
Glad to have worked for so many years with Byron.
Byron's life is an inspiration for all. I fondly remember him telling a story of a SELS (today's Storm Prediction Center) forecaster in Kansas City taking him under his wing, mentoring him, and helping him get his start in the National Weather Service. This brought him a very rewarding and successful career, and a fruitful life including two wonderful daughters. We were all blessed by his presence in the NWS, and will dearly miss his smile, light-hearted nature, and especially his laugh.

I worked with Byron for 20 years at NWS. I will miss his great smile and laugh. Byron and Dan (RIP) were my favorite people to golf with. I will truly miss him.
This is hard news - Byron was the best of us at NOAA and the first face I saw -as soon as I started work there. Always so welcoming. Always smiling. That is how I will remember him. And I selfishly wish he had more time on this Earth. He was a precious gift to us all.
