I was shocked and tremendously sad to read of Anne Marie’s death. I have known her since our early days as parishioners at Canadian Martyrs, and remember at that time admiring her very gracious manner, and commitment to her family. Over the years we shared many early morning outdoor swims. Few moved that flutterboard along faster than Anne Marie!
Her death is a huge loss to our community.
Dan and I send our deepest sympathy to all her family.
Dear Bob and family, I am so sorry for your devastating loss. I didn't know Anne Marie well, but whenever we interacted, I was impressed by her kindness, enthusiasm and professionalism. She will be missed and warmly remembered by many. I wish you all strength.
I was privileged to have had Anne Marie as a colleague and as a friend. She was a model of kindness and compassion, always, and was a tremendously talented instructor who generously shared her joy in teaching. Her passing is a huge loss to the university community. My thoughts are with her family. She will be so missed.
I was so saddened to learn of Anne Marie’s passing. I have very fond memories of the time I spent working with her at SMU. She had a beautiful personality, full of warmth, kindness, wisdom, and grace. My heartfelt condolences to you and your family, Bob. She will be missed by so many.
Anne Marie was such a dear friend to me for 20 years, I feel so lucky to have known her and miss her so much. Always ready to listen, to talk, to share ideas, to champion teaching and learning, I learned a lot from her. I am so glad I had the privilege to teach and present with her. She would often wonder out loud to me: 'What makes me a good teacher?' Honestly, I think it was the essence of who she was as a person that mattered most - curious, kind and caring, passionate, compassionate, creative - alway willing to learn. Bob, Fiona, Kerrianne, and Erin, I am so deeply sorry for this terribly sudden loss you are suffering. She will always be in my heart and in my thoughts.
Beautiful obituary. Condolences to Anne Marie’s family. She was an amazing educator - like no other - making well rounded thinkers of her students. And so kind.. I always felt welcomed to drop by to discuss ideas or concepts.. she will be greatly missed.
Erin, Brad and I are so sorry for your loss, our hearts ache for you and your family. Your mum was a remarkable woman. We may not have known her personally but we can feel her love through you and the way you treat everyone in your life. Sending you all of our love.
An extraordinary woman, I am so sorry to hear of her sudden passing. Prayers for the entire family during this difficult time. I will always remember her as a smiling, positive light in the deep dark dungeon of the LSC. As a young female in the geoscience program, I didn't fully appreciate at the time, how important it was to have great female teachers in that field.
We are all saddened to hear of Anne Marie's passing and extend condolences to her family. Her work on teaching excellence, her encouragement of SOTL, and her focus on innovation were known across the country - as an example, she was an important contributor to panels at STLHE. Our scholarly community, at Saint Mary's and Dalhousie and within earth sciences, has lost a truly student-focused colleague.
I was so saddened to hear of Anne Marie’s sudden passing and extend my sincere condolences to Bob and the rest of her family—thank you for sharing this beautiful tribute. I had the good fortune to interact with Anne Marie many times over the last two decades thanks to our common passion for environmental geoscience and interest in mentoring the next generation of earth scientists. Her passion, kindness, intelligence, and dedication to teaching truly set her apart. Anne Marie’s enthusiam and interest in helping others was a huge benefit to the local geoscience scene and the many students who were lucky enough to have her as a prof. I’m grateful for the time I spent together with Anne Marie—her kindness and compassion raised the bar for us all.
My heart breaks for Anne-Marie’s family, colleagues, and all of her former students at Dalhousie University.
Anne-Marie was an absolutely incredible professor and I will be forever grateful to her for always being so kind, helpful, and encouraging toward me when I roamed the halls in the Geology department. Her door was always open and she always had time to answer my random questions. I fell in love with Geology because of her intro courses (which I took on a whim because I wanted fun electives) and ended up loving it so much…I decided to make it into a double major.
My deepest condolences to you Bob and to your beautiful daughters. Anne Marie was such a powerhouse in the field of geoscience and an exceptionally talented teacher/mentor/guide/thinker. I was always so touched by her kindness and sensitivity. She will long be remembered.
My deepest condolences to the family, close friends and to the Earth and Environmental Sciences Department at Dalhousie. Dr. Ryan was one of my favourite professors, she will be greatly missed!
Dear Bob, Fiona, Kerrianne and Erin and all of your families, and to Anne Marie's siblings.
Your loss is surely unbearable at this time. I will remember our times together at Canadian Martyr's with great fondness, respect and awe for her humility, her profound humanity, her positivity and her loving and caring spirit.
Anna Marie was a gift to us all.
From Pauline Murphy and Elliott Sutow and our family.
Dear Bob, My heart is with you and your family as you face the sad challenge of your sudden loss. I did not know Anne Marie well - a few years ago she generously shared her expertise with me about paleo-weathering profiles - but those professional communications were all it took to be able to see how true the personal words are in her lovely obituary.
