Rusty's obituary

William Russell McKeown (“Rusty” or “Rus”), age 60, of Fort Worth, Texas, passed away on June 8, 2025, following a heart-related condition.

Russell was born on March 10, 1965, to Curtis McKeown and Ann Rompf. The eldest of his siblings, he grew up with a deep sense of responsibility and a heart for family—qualities that would become defining threads throughout his life.

Russell worked for 26 years at LIFE Outreach International, where he served faithfully as Assistant Manager of Mail Operations. He found great purpose in his work and in the people he served alongside.

He was a man of many passions. A lifelong music lover, Russell grew up on the sounds of bands like AC/DC and Van Halen. He later became an enthusiastic supporter of the local Christian rock scene, often attending concerts and encouraging up-and-coming bands. He was also an avid reader—especially of science fiction and fantasy—and a true fan of storytelling in all its forms. He especially loved movies—everything from Star Wars and science fiction epics to apocalypse thrillers, monster features, and action-packed blockbusters. He was a devoted sports fan who never missed a chance to cheer on his favorite teams, especially the Texas Rangers, Dallas Stars, and Dallas Cowboys—even when his teams were far from championship contention.

Russell passed his love of music, books, movies, and sports on to his daughters, who carry on his legacy. He had a warm, recognizable laugh and a joyful presence that lit up a room. He had a gift for making others feel welcome, supported, and seen. A true and loyal friend, he always looked for ways to care for those around him—never seeking the spotlight, but always showing up when it mattered most.

One of the many ways he showed up was through coaching. Russell spent years coaching both his daughters in youth kickball and, in the process, impacted the lives of hundreds of young girls in the community. His encouragement, enthusiasm, and dedication left a lasting impact far beyond the field.

Outside of work and community, Russell was a passionate photographer and videographer who spent much of his time behind the camera, capturing moments that the family continues to treasure. He became the unofficial family historian—meticulously organizing photos, researching family ancestry, and lovingly preserving the stories of where they came from.

Russell is survived by his beloved wife, Sondra McKeown; his daughters, Amanda Kongvold and her husband, Bryce, and Allison Johnson and her husband, Matthew; and his parents and step-parents, Curtis and Sylvia McKeown, and Ann and Jack Rompf.

He is also survived by his siblings, Rob McKeown and his wife, Sherlynn, Rick McKeown, and Terri Gilmore and her husband, Maurice; his sister- and brother-in-law, Dana and Scott Young; and his mother-in-law, Diana Winslow. Russell also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family who loved him dearly.

Russell will be remembered for his steady presence, his storytelling, and the care he poured into preserving the memories of those he loved. His legacy lives on in every photo he took, every laugh he sparked, and every heart he touched.
