William's obituary

William (Bill) A. Maurer, 74, of Barnegat, NJ, died peacefully in his home on October 25, 2022. Born in Shenandoah, Pa., Bill was also a long-time resident of Whitehall, Pa., where he worked as a machinist for more than 30 years. Bill served in the United States Army from 1968 to 1970, during which time he was a paratrooper with an Airborne company in Fairbanks, Alaska. After his time in the service, Bill became a licensed single-engine pilot, and later turned that passion for flight into hang gliding as a pilot and instructor with USHGA.

Bill was a devoted Mason of Jordan-Martin Lodge #673 Allentown, Pa. for more than 37 years. He was always willing to help when called upon and served as Lodge Chaplin in 1995.

Bill spent the last decade living in Barnegat where he did what he loved best - spending time with his beloved wife of 53 years, Cristine (Scanniello), fishing and kayaking in Barnegat Bay, and playing pool in his garage. Not one to sit still and an avid maker, Bill was always building and fixing things. He loved to read and could talk for hours about boats and sports, especially the Green Bay Packers and the Philadelphia Phillies. On one of his last nights, he was surrounded by his loving family as he watched the Phillies win the National League title.

In addition to his wife, Cristine, Bill is survived by his son William (Bill) and daughter-in-law, Megan Killian, and his daughter Laura and son-in-law, Jason Parmer, and his granddaughters Lauren and Lillian. Also survived by his siblings Ray Maurer, Ronny Maurer, David Wurtz and Marilyn Fisher. Bill was predeceased by his father, Ray Maurer; mother, Geraldine Wurtz; Stepfather, Don Wurtz; and brother, Donny Wurtz.

A celebration of life service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to The Salvation Army in Bill’s honor.
