Personal note from Kristen

Bill was a tremendously loyal, loving, and unassuming man. He was a wonderful story teller, and people in his community connected with him easily and knew him as a kind and giving person. He loved his family and he loved the Marine Corps; to know him was to feel his pride in his country and in those he loved.

Bill used to be my running partner. I remember going out running with him a lot when he and mom (and I) lived in New Mexico; I think we did that wherever we lived (except in Cairo!). It made me laugh when, later in life, I'd invite him on a run and he'd laugh. "Nope! Not if I don't have to!"

I loved listening to his thoughts on foreign policy and knowledge of American history. A few months before he passed, he was talking to me on the front porch about his thoughts on the Middle East, and I remember thinking it was impressive that he still thought about those issues.

I want to acknowledge here that my interest in, knowledge of, and commitment to, international affairs, travel, and culture was a gift to me from Bill. It was his assignment overseas that opened my teenaged mind to a whole huge world out there. I am so deeply, emphatically grateful for this. I miss him very much.
