Bill's obituary

It is with great sadness to announce the death of William S. “Bill” Karp, friend to hundreds, mentor to dozens, and admired and respected by everyone who came in contact with him. His last job was director of Broward Childcare Licensing and Enforcement,  where he made great strides in improving the safety and compliance of pre-schools and after school programs.

He fought the good fight with Ocular Melanoma and metastatic disease for over nine years, and left knowing how loved he was by his husband and partner of 32 years, his family, friends and colleagues. His body will be cremated.

Please do not send flowers. If you feel you must give something, please consider a donation in his name to the Ocular Melanoma Foundation or A Cure in Sight, which provides support and financial assistance for others struggling with this rare cancer.  You can also honor his life by getting  a dilated eye exam every year. Early detection saves lives.

Our thanks to all of you who kept his spirits up and provided assistance, gave him a birthday parade, kept us fed and supported us in so many ways, including landscape assistance, meal prep, financial help, procurement of hospital and comfort supplies, and housekeeping assistance. Thank you for flying in from all over to show your love and to say goodbye. It made the journey so much easier for us, and we are so moved by your loving care and generosity.

We owe special gratitude to the medical staff of Murray Ocular Oncology in Coral Gables. Dr. Murray, Dr. Gold, and the rest of his loving and supportive staff kept Bill’s vision stable for over 9 years. Dr. Murray is the best of the best with a wonderful, caring and gentle staff.

The staff of Dr. Jose Lutzky at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center became like family and did their best to prolong Bill’s life. The care we received from both of these staffs was extraordinary and second to none, and we will be forever in their debt.

We would also like to thank the staff of Vitas Hospice. Our team always went the extra mile, night or day, to simplify his last days and make him comfortable. They are the true angels of the medical field and made even the simplest request an expeditious priority.
