Bill's obituary

William (Bill) Robert Mattison Edmonds III passed away peacefully at the age of 72 on September 1, 2024, at his home in Downers Grove, Illinois.

Bill was born February 22, 1952, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to William Edmonds, Jr. and Joyce Jones Edmonds. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corp from 1969-1973. After his military service, he worked in construction as a “tough, but fair” Area Manager (though when asked, he would always proudly insist his title was “Ironworker”). Bill greatly enjoyed serving as a pack leader for the Boy Scouts of America, even after his son left the organization. Bill was always moving and could often be found working on more than one project at a time: crafting his beautifully landscaped yard, fixing nearly anything that was broken in the house (or chattily watching and learning when he realized he needed to bring in a pro), decorating for holidays, and expanding his spectacular collection of self-refurbished dragon statues and signed fantasy books.

Most importantly, Bill deeply loved his family. He never missed a family birthday or anniversary and often brought fresh flowers to his wife Gail. He took great pride in seeing his son Matt’s work on the stage. Bill’s dog Jamie and cats Blue and Bob were his devoted companions and already miss him greatly.

Bill is survived by his wife of 45 years, Gail Edmonds; his son Matt Edmonds and daughter-in-law Katie Galetti; his siblings Linda, Beverly, Mike, Chris and David Edmonds, and Marie Coch; mother-in-law Jeanne Benson; and many other extended family members.

A celebration of Bill’s life will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, September 9, 2024, at Adams-Winterfield & Sullivan Funeral Home (4343 Main Street, Downers Grove, IL 60515).
