I worked with Warren "across the table" as the regulator for a number of years.  We had numerous discussions and debates, of course, but they were always respectful and I learned something new from Warren every time.  It was clear he was passionate about his work and enjoyed sharing his knowledge.  I last saw Warren in person in the fall of 2022 where we chatted about his retirement plans.  It was clear from that discussion that he was equally passionate about his recreational time!  It was truly a shock to hear of his passing.  He was a good man who I enjoyed working with.
I worked with Warren for about 5 years and he taught me everything from mine water return to stock investing! Warren - you were a true mentor and a friend, I am going to miss you dearly!

Hi Brent, Theresa and family!  This is sure sad news!  Our sincere condolences!  We never had much opportunity to be around your family growing up at Mendham!   I left there in 1975 and ended up settling down near Regina in Lumsden.  I think the last time we were together was the Zubot reunion at Orville’s farm and Burstall!  Time sure flys and it sounds like Warren made good use of his time here on this earth!   I’m sure Orville and Warren are now together discussing each others motorcycle trips and their mom and dads are there with them too!  God bless and keep in touch!  306-535-8776

I am taking this opportunity to apologise to Brent and his friends, for anything that we did at the cabin, that they got blamed for.

Enough said!

On one of our bike trips, we had left Clarkston, Wash., headed south on The Rattlesnake (hwy 129), a road we were knocking off of our list. When we stopped for lunch and a beer  in Enterprise, Oregon. During lunch, Warren had that look on his face where he is formulating one of his thoughts into a question. I continued eating my burger, then he asks, " When was the last time you were in Seattle?". I responded with the question, "I guess that's where we are headed?". He smiled and responded with a, "Yep!". After lunch, we feuled up, and started heading towards the west coast, on our way to Seattle. That is all it took for us to make a decision on where to go. I would have followed him where ever he wanted to go, and vice versa. No discussion, just action. Everyday was a new adventure and we rarely planned our next move, we just let the day, the situation, the weather, or our curiosity decide what we did.

We had been experiencing perfect, hot , dry weather the entire trip up until then, that is until we got about 10 miles out of Auburn, Wash. at that point it started raining so bad, there was 2 inches of water flowing across the streets. We pulled into a convention centre parking lot, to get out of the rain and wait it out, completely soaked to the core. After we finished ringing out our clothes and finding something dry in our bags, the clouds opened up and we found a motel. There was a seafood restaurant, with an all you can eat seafood bar. We had an amazing meal, stuffing ourselves with many of ultra fresh delights they had on offer. After we were done and pushed away from the table. Warren smiled, looked at me and said, "We are lucky it started raining on us, Eh?". I agreed.

Sorry to hear of Warren’s passing. Sending condolences to all of Warren’s family and friends.

I am writing on behalf of Aunt Bea and myself.

Warren’s family and our family left most of the larger family and moved to Northern Alberta in the late 60’s. So our two families spent a lot of time together, both working and socializing.

We knew Warren well at that time and the cousins had a lot of fun together. His mind just soaked everything up, he was like a sponge. I can still hear Isolde say “Warreneee” in her distinct voice and it makes me smile.

We regret that we were not able to see him in recent years.

Brent and Theresa, your family is our family and our door is always open to you.

Love:

Aunt Bea and Carla

It is with a sad heart when I think of Warren and his sudden passing. I worked with Warren for about 10 years. He, as the subject matter expect, would say we have do more testing or more field  work and me saying, "No Warren we do not have the budget for that ", Warren would say, lets talk next week in the field. More often than not, he convinced me and others that it was the right thing to do. I will miss his smile and  laugh, of which we did a lot in the field, he was a wonderful colleague and a friend.

When I was a coop student at Syncrude, Warren was my mentor in 2003/2004 when I was transferred from Aurora to 41M. My work term was extended from 8 months to 12 months and finally to 16 months. I was thankful because I was a working student and I was saving it for my last year in engineering in the hope of not having to balance 5-6 courses a semester while working 19 hours minimum. However, Warren did not stop there.

In my last months, he was able to get me a full-time contract offer as a permanent worker upon completion of my university. It was a turning point in my life that got me where I am today.

When I returned and had an opportunity to be at Edmonton Research I took him out for dinner and thanked him for that opportunity. He is a friend with that even though you lose touch, it's like time has not passed. This reminds me of a quote, “True friendship is when two friends can walk in opposite directions, yet remain side by side.” He did not change because he never had a filter ~ he was confident in who he was and you can take it or leave it. That's what I admired.

I always believe we are here on earth to BECOME good. I guess God thought you completed your mission and took you home to rest.

I won’t forget the red marks on my term report or the call when you found out I have lost my grandpa and dad within a month and that you lost your mother, and made me laugh by telling me a story about your jogging experience that landed you a black eye. Thank you, Warren for being my mentor and instrumental in allowing me to have a good career and life.

I worked with Warren for many of the years I was at Syncrude.  We had many discussions on such a variety of topics when I worked out of Edmonton office.  Both of us had a love of the environment especially anything to do with water!  Warren will be missed as a friend and a colleague with such an amazing mind! ❤️❤️

I am Brent’s wife and Warren’s sister-in-law. I actually knew Warren a few years before I met Brent. Warren was a best friend to my brother Chris MacMillan during high school in Red Deer in the 80s. I remember Warren hanging out with Chris and his buddies and we used to go to many of the same high school parties. He was always quiet, maybe a little shy around the girls but also always kind. I lost my brother Chris in 1994, and it was hard on Warren plus many of his high school friends. i always felt a close connection with Warren because he was one of the few people in my life that knew my brothers Chris & Jim. I’m thankful for my time with Warren and his friendship.

He was a good brother to Brent and a very devoted son to his parents and he really impressed me over the past 8 years how he stepped up to help support their Mom during her battle with dementia. No matter where he was in the world, he would find the time to call his Mom at least once a day and ask her how to cook some sort of meal, just to keep her mind moving, and when he was in town he would bring her favorite Chinese food for dinner. They would talk politics and she would laugh at his “very passionate” thoughts about our current prime minister and the state of our government 😂.  She adored him. He will be missed by everyone.
