Warren's obituary

Warren Saunders 96, died on January 30, 2020, near his home in Houston, Texas. Warren was born in Potosi, Missouri, the son of Lynnwood and Edna (Sauerbrunn) Saunders. He grew up during the Great Depression in St. Louis, Missouri and graduated from Soldan High School. During World War II, he served in the United States Army Signal Corps, stationed in the Philippines and Japan. Upon his return, he completed his bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering at Columbia University under the G.I. Bill. At Columbia, he also pitched for the baseball team, captained the tennis team and was ranked number one on the golf squad. In 1948, he began his career with Shell Oil Company (Deer Park Refinery), where he worked in a variety of engineering and executive positions until 1991. Also in 1948, Warren married the love of his life, Beatrice Leigh Blue. They started their family in Houston and added children and friends as Warren’s career took them to New York City, St. Louis, the San Francisco Bay area, Houston and St. Louis again. His final position with Shell landed them in the Clear Lake City area of Houston, where Warren and Bea happily lived out the rest of their lives.

Warren had a zest for life, a generosity of spirit and an infectious smile. He was the ultimate positive thinker and people person. A lifelong athlete, he skied, golfed and played tennis into his seventies, and was a regular medaling competitor in the Senior Olympics. In later years, he stayed active by walking laps inside the local Kroger every day, making friends with everyone in his path. He was an American patriot, always advocating for conservative fiscal policies while embracing the humanity of every person.

Warren is survived by: his daughters Susan Jewell (Clint) of Leadville, Colorado, and Carol Saunders (Greg Harbaugh) of Sullivan, Wisconsin; sons Lynnwood D. (Woody) Saunders (Katie) of St. Louis, Missouri, Warren C. Saunders (Fernalyn) of Melbourne, Florida, and Scott D. Saunders (Verena) of St. Louis, Missouri; and thirteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend of anyone willing to be his friend, Warren was loved by many. His bright light and enthusiastic passion for life lives on in the hearts of us all.
