Ukot's obituary

Pastor (Mrs) Ukot Grace Obadan (nee Ukotibeno Enobong I. Etteh) was born to Hannah and Enobong Ikpong Etteh of Upenekang, Ibeno LGA, Akwa Ibom, Nigeria, on January 1st, 1957. Growing up as part of a large family in Yaba, Lagos, she was the sixth of eight children and was fondly called Ukot Mma by her siblings.

With her parents being strong advocates for girl child education, Grace received her primary school education at the Lady-Lak Institute, Yaba, Lagos (1966-1972). She also received domestic science training in Arts and Crafts, Tailoring, and Cookery. She went on to receive her secondary school education from the Royal Polytechnic College, Onike, Lagos and the Holy Saviour's College, Isolo, Lagos (1973-1977). Thereafter, she obtained a Certificate in Environmental Health from the Lagos State College of Health Technology, Yaba, Lagos (1994-1997), and a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Education (with emphasis on Childhood Development) from the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos (2002-2006). As an ardent fashion lover, she obtained formal training in fashion design from Supreme Stitches, Ikeja, and a diploma in Design from the Yaba College of Technology, Yaba, Lagos. In 2005, she was granted an honorary doctorate degree in Theology by the SOMAM Theological Seminary, Ilorin, Nigeria.

Grace began her professional career at the Weatherite Insurance Company as a clerical officer but later joined the Federal Ministry of Health, Port Health Services as an Environment Health Officer. She steadily rose through the ranks until her retirement in 2007 after 27 years as a civil servant.

Grace met the love of her life, Engr. Israel Dele Obadan, in 1982 at Surulere, Lagos. It was love at first sight! They were married on January 8, 1983, in Lagos, and went on to have two lovely children, Engr. Samuel Ifije Obadan and Dr. (Mrs) Enihomo Mary Obadan-Udoh, and two grandsons, Masters John and Joshua Udoh.

In addition to being a dedicated wife and loving mother, Grace was a kind, loving, and generous person. From her childhood, she cared for the needy around her, her generosity endeared her to so many people, and she continued this trait until the end. She never discriminated against people based on their status in life but welcomed the high and the lowly. Her home was open to all, she loved to socialize, and was very accommodating. She was a problem-solver; anyone who came to her in tears, left smiling. She was also an enterprising and forthright person, undertaking several business ventures including, fashion design, soap and detergent manufacturing, retail sales, network distribution, and roofing material supplies.

Grace held an unwavering faith in God and strongly believed in the efficacy of prayers. She spent a great deal of her life in prayer and reaped the fruits of prayers in her life. Although she was introduced to Christianity at an early age by her parents who were devoted members of the Qua Iboe church, her quest for God led her to various churches including, Christ Apostolic Church, Deeper Life Bible Church, Redeemed Christian Church of God, and Daystar Christian Center. She was ordained as a pastor in 2007 at the Salvation and Healing Ministries, Aguda, Lagos. She eventually returned to Deeper Life Bible Church and remained a member until her demise on December 31, 2021, at 64 years.

She is survived by her Husband, Son, Daughter, Grandsons, Sisters, Brothers, Nieces, and Nephews.

2 CORINTHIANS 1:3-4

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
