Hi Dad!

Four years later and we are finally going to have a Celebration of Your Life!

Still missing you and will forever. I published your poem, Into the Woods for a Basket of Soup, based on the character, the fox in pepper green socks and of course your poem.

The book sold out last week at the market where I am a vendor.

Memories are prevalent. I am continuing to write and now I am strategising possibilities for your music.  I will never give up!

In lieu of flowers

I miss you Dad! Sherry is here with me in Sarasota and a great comfort, especially after your son Christopher's death in November. I miss all three (3) of you too much and focus on what you have taught me, not the crazy, stressful times.

Yesterday, Sherry did the "Dad Ostrich Walk" and we remembered, laughed and cried. We loved your wonderful sense of humor on those days that you ostrich walked into the dining room and read us your latest limerick!

I am actively working on your "stuff", although life and events can get in the way. I am determined to continue to honor your memory.

  • Love and kisses. I think of you every day and feel your presence in my life as if you were here beside me now.

when twin Darryl and i were around 14 or 15 fifteen my father said he was going to bring us into new york city for the weekend--he had recently rented an apt. in midtown manhattan where there was a double bed--cot--couch and office---i was psyched and looking forward to wearing the new clothes my mother had bought Darryl and i--clothes my father would NEVER have bought us--low rize blue bell bottoms with white belts and slightly different flower patterned shirts on a blue background---very 'mod'--and dad was a little shocked to see us--but said nothing---he thought we would be in the last clothes he had bought us from 'brooks brothers'--the same as he--his father and grandfather had worn for dress occasions---we went to several jazz clubs that evening which i loved and the famous 'horn and hardart' cafeteria--which was ultra modern--for lunch the next day---great day and a half in our --Darryl's and mine''--home town--nyc

I say that Dad would have thought all this empathise on the "corona virus" was obvious political maneuvering. He thought for himself and was not impressed with either social-engineering or manufactured consent.
Dad once was offered a 58' Hatteras as what ever he'd use it for by Yon Koblick, the founder of MRDF. He passed, much to my chagrin. I thought he and I could venture out to the Bermuda Triangle. He did what he did, and was not impressed with the maintenance costs.

He once introduced me to Dave Thomas, while the owner of the New England Patriots waited to say hello. I forget his name, oh yah, Kraft, I believe. Obviously, Pop was not of these boys stature, but he could get himself in the crowd with the best of them.
I attended several Rotary meetings in Florida, in which Pop was a speaker, and besides his propensity to jingle his pocket change, I was so impressed! He naturally commanded respect and was well-liked.
What I have a profound impression of is his voice and how well he expressed himself. I also, being much older now, recognize an accent that we should call " New Haven's Best Blend". I loved his manner of expression in all ways, especially his open awkwardness, which he relished. Why? Because he was doing something you wish you could.
I enjoyed every minute I spent with Tom Smith. We talked we argued. Sometimes we agreed. His visits to our home were always a fun experience. He greatly enjoyed listening to Kim recite his songs and poetry. We discussed many topics. Only in later years did he talk more about his own story as he opened up about his World War II experience. And what a story that was. When he was in the hospital on one occasion Kim and and I tried to amuse ourselves and him with our own Limericks. We were rank armatures at the feet of the master. I will miss Tom, his raspy voice his laugh, and his tall lanky walk into a room. We spent time with him but not nearly enough.

When the Sparrow's on the Lilac Limb, by Thomas Richard Smith

When the lilac bush is high
When it's sweet before the eye
Would a blind man pass it by?

When a sparrow chirps a blare
And its trumpet stirs the air
Would a deaf man be aware?

When the soul's a singing bird
Past the bounds of any word
Would a mute man go unheard?

When a deaf man hears a silent hymn
And a mute man sings the tune within
When the blind man stops to sing with them
Then the sparrow is on the lilac limb
One of Grandpas poems I kept …
One of Grandpas poems I kept that always resonated with me.
You were right
I am my fight
To the top , I say
even if for a day
