Sylvia's obituary

Sylvia Myers Willoughby, 93, passed away peacefully with her children at her side on Monday, July 14 at her lakeside cottage in Contoocook, NH.

A native New Englander, Sylvia was born in Bennington, VT, to Col. Charles Hayward and Gladys Clough Hayward on June 28, 1927. As the daughter of a military professional, Sylvia grew up in many parts of the country as well as Japan, where her father was posted after the war. As an adult she resided in Albany, NY, Delaware, OH, Daytona, FL, Ocala, FL and Sunapee, NH.

Sylvia married Frederick H. Myers on December 18, 1948. They raised their four children in Delaware, OH, where Fred was a professor and a soccer and lacrosse coach at Ohio Wesleyan University. Sylvia went back to college, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a Fine Arts degree from Ohio Wesleyan in 1969, the same year her eldest child entered OWU. Upon graduation, she worked as an elementary school teacher and a real estate broker.

After being widowed in 1977, Sylvia married Victor Willoughby in 1981. Victor died in 1989.

Sylvia defined herself as a mother, a nana, a volunteer and an artist. As a volunteer, Sylvia was involved in the Sunapee Cove community, the PTA, the Grady Memorial Hospital volunteer corp, many arts organizations and at churches in the towns where she lived.

Sylvia began her journey as an artist at a very young age. During her travels growing up, her family encouraged her to develop her skills. Sylvia took a hiatus from art to raise four children but when she returned to college, her love of art was rekindled. She continued to take art classes throughout her life. She is best known for her watercolors, and celebrated her first solo art show at Sunapee Cove at age 92. She loved capturing the beauty in the world, especially landscapes.

She is survived by her four children: Charles F. Myers of Phoenix, AZ, Paul T. Myers of Reston, VA, Sheri L. Myers of New Orleans, LA and Karen M. Harman of Westport, CT, 11 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Ruthie “Nicci” White of Sunapee, NH, formerly of Hopkinton, NH.

After her cremation, Sylvia will be buried next to her husband, Frederick Myers, and her father at the Contoocook Village Cemetery in Contoocook, NH.

Tributes and condolences can be submitted and viewed at Everloved.com. The family would like to thank the caregivers at Sunapee Cove and Bayada Hospice for their dedication to her health and wellbeing.

In lieu of flowers, her family has requested that donations be made in her honor to the Hopkinton Historical Society/New Hampshire Antiquarian Society, 300 Main St., Hopkinton, NH 03229; 603-746-5352; Website: www.HopkintonHistory.org; Email: nhas@tds.net.
