Steve's obituary

Mr. Steven "Steve" Yates, 59, of Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico passed away suddenly on June 05, 2023 after suffering from a massive cardiac arrest, at his home in Conchas Chinas, Puerto Vallarta. He was with his loving husband, John Yates.

After Steve attended Sabino High School, he went on to study at The University of Arizona. Steve was an avid performer and lover of all things theatre, music, dance and performance. Steve had enormous artistic talents and loved being on (any) stage, whether it was clogging in San Francisco, Karoake, theatre productions, or performing for a charity event in Puerto Vallarta. Puerto Vallarta also grew to love and know Steve as a great dancer, who was also known to dabble with song as well.

In 2009, Steve met John, his "pumpkin" and soulmate and they married in 2013. Steve & John were married in San Francisco on August 2, the anniversary of their first date (because at Steve's request: he didn't want to have to remember another date.)

In December 2014, Steve wrote this short biography & advice, on social media:

"25 years ago this week, I took my dog Amigo, packed my 1 bedroom apartment in Tucson, Arizona, and moved to the Bay Area. Since then, I've had 13 different addresses, held 9 different positions with 4 different employers, fell in love and got my heart broken, lived single for 15 years, then met and married my soulmate. I've made mistakes along the way but have always kept my feet moving. Every step, both good and bad, has led me to where I am today. So be flexible, take advantage of opportunities when they present themselves, and when you're scared, jump in with both feet. Amazing things happen every day."

In 2021, after working for Workday for 10 years, Steve finally retired with his husband, John, in Puerto Vallarta Mexico.

Steve Yates has been described as "vivacious" and "engaging, with an ever present smile and a laugh that brightened every room or space he walked into." After his passing, some wrote, "Steve was a natural leader, and he was destined to become part of the bedrock of our community in Puerto Vallarta. Gone too soon."

Steve's impact on the people and communities where he's lived is immense. He will be dearly missed by us all.

Steve is survived by his loving husband, John Yates; His father, Mike Yates Sr; his brother Mike Yates JR and Mike's wife Zann Yates and their children, Nicole and Bryan Yates; and his sister, Kathy Ann Yates Allan and her children, David, Ashley and Kory.
