On this All Souls Day it seems appropriate to share this video of Steven biking in Greenfield Park on 9/20/2024. He was ahead of me so the video only shows him from behind.

Always appreciated Steven's friendship and the opportunity to ride with someone half my age. :-) I think that speaks to Steven's maturity and his ability to connect with all sorts of people in his personal life and his work life.
You all in my thoughts. Steven was such a hilarious guy, always knew how to cheery anyone up. I'm short and whenever steve came to hang out he would air hug the air and just start laughing! met him online years ago and were great friends in 2010. He will be dearly missed. Farewell steeeeeeeeve!

Steven with David Stack after completing 12-hour on track endurance event
Several years ago I noticed on Facebook that there was someone in the area who rode the same make and model of recumbent trike as I did. I made note of his name, Steven Cotton.

A year or so later, my family was riding home one evening and I saw a guy on a trike like mine parked on the side of the trail. I circled back and asked, “Are you Steven?”

That encounter led to a number of rides together each year and some text or Facebook chatter in between.

Steve Cotton memorial slide show. He left us on Sept 20, 2024. Also known as Racingswordsman (Racing Swordsman, Racing swordman), he touched many lives with his recumbent Catrike videos, Gran Turismo racing, and Renaissance Faire participation. We love you and miss you.

We send a heartfelt thank you to everyone who acknowledged Steven with your fond messages and emails, with cards and letters, and by personally attending his memorial celebration. Your personal touch has helped us work through this challenging time, and we are especially proud of him for the positive impact he had on so many people. Someone summed it up well on Saturday; "he was a genuinely good person".

We share this poem with you as we take comfort in knowing that Steven will always be with us. (Attributed to David Romano, 1993)

When tomorrow starts without me

And I'm not there to see;

If the sun should rise and find your eyes

All filled with tears for me.

I wish so much you wouldn't cry

The way you did today;

While thinking of the many things

We didn't get to say.

I know how much you love me

As much as I love you;

And each time that you think of me,

I know you'll miss me too.

But when tomorrow starts without me

Please try to understand,

That an angel came and called my name

And took me by the hand.

She said my place was ready

In heaven far above;

And that I'd have to leave behind,

All those I dearly love.

But as I turned to walk away,

A tear fell from my eye;

For all my life, I'd always thought

I didn't want to die.

I had so much to live for,

So much yet to do;

It seemed almost impossible,

That I was leaving you.

I thought of all the yesterdays,

The good ones and the bad;

I thought of all the love we shared,

And all the fun we had.

If I could relive yesterday

Just even for awhile,

I'd say goodbye and kiss you

And maybe see you smile.

But then I fully realized

That this could never be;

For emptiness and memories

Would take the place of me.

And when I thought of worldly things

I might miss come tomorrow;

I thought of you, and when I did,

My heart was filled with sorrow.

But when I walked through heaven's gates

I felt so much at home;

When God looked down and smiled at me

From His great golden throne.

He said, "This is eternity

And all I've promised you;

Today your life on earth is past,

But here it all starts anew."

"I promise no tomorrow,

But today will always last;

And since each day's the same day,

There's no longing for the past."

"But you have been so faithful,

So trusting and so true;

Though at times you did do things,

You knew you shouldn't do."

"But you have been forgiven

And now at last you're free;

So won't you take my hand

And share my life with me?"

So when tomorrow starts without me,

Don't think we're far apart

For every time you think of me,

I'm right here in your heart.

Steve and I both attended Wisconsin Hills Middle School and Brookfield Central High School, graduating class of 2007. We got to know each other during our Sophomore year. Before first hour Algebra, we would regularly discuss music, which was always for me one of the social highlights of the school day. Usually at least one of us would have a portable CD player and we would share what we were listening to. Another notable moment was in U.S History with Mr. Darin where the class was assigned to create a PowerPoint and speech where the theme was “songs dealing with war.” We chose Goodnight Saigon by Billy Joel, and the presentation was fun to deliver and well received. After high school, we hung out with our mutual friend Nick Zompa a number of times. Laser tag and bowling were the main activities. We were both Groomsmen for Nick’s wedding this past April. It was always nice to catch up with Steve at each of the wedding related functions. Even if there were time spans between social opportunities, we were always able to pick up where we last left off. Condolences to Steve’s family, friends and Taylor.

John & Family,

Sorry for your loss, you’re in our thoughts & prayers.
