Stephen's obituary

We regretfully announce the passing of Stephen “Steve” Dooley, 78, of Plainfield, CT. Stephen passed away on May 1, 2022.


Steve was born to William J Dooley Sr. and E Genesta (Baker) Dooley on October 19, 1943 in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. 

Those who were fortunate enough to know Steve, will remember his kindness and warm personality. He was a great friend to many, and always willing to help.  He served on the Board of Directors at the Colonial Woods Association, Plainfield, CT.

Steve was an excellent student and athlete graduating from Fitchburg High School in 1962.   He played football, baseball, ran the junior/senior relays, was a finalist in the Literary Club Speaking Group, and served as Class Treasurer, his Senior year.

Steve graduated in 1967 from Fitchburg State University with B.A. in Industrial Arts. While at FSU, he was a member of the Fitchburg  Industrial Arts Association and the Mohawk Club.  He went on to receive a Master’s Degree in Education, 1972.   

Steve began his career as a teacher at Auburn High School, Auburn, Massachusetts, a position he cherished for over 40 years.  He also taught Drivers Education.  In 1984, Steve was named “Outstanding Industrial Arts Teacher” by the Massachusetts Industrial Education Society.  This prestigious honor was near and dear to his heart. 

Steve was married 44 years to Lois Irene (Driscoll) Dooley, also a graduate of Fitchburg State University and a teacher in Groton MA, Auburn MA, and Plainfield, CT.  They shared a strong  commitment to education.  When not at work, they enjoyed camping in Maine and New Hampshire. 

Steve retired after 40+ years in teaching, and worked with machinery, gardening, construction, repairs, and helping family and friends with numerous projects. During retirement years, he built his own barn, helped to remodel rooms, and even returned to Auburn High School as a substitute teacher. 

Steve is survived by his brother and sister in law Norman and Kathleen Dooley of Seabrook, NH; as well as nieces, nephews, and several great nieces and nephews. 

He is predeceased by his wife Lois Dooley, 2012; both parents and both in-laws, sister Marilyn Romano; and brother William J. Dooley Jr.

A Celebration of Life will be held 12:00, Monday, May 23 at St. John the Apostle Church, Plainfield, CT.  Final interment will be at St. Bernard’s Cemetery, Fitchburg, Massachusetts, at a later date.
