I had the pleasure of meeting Steve at a project that was sideways (in more ways than one) in 2014.  He was different than the local yokels the project had currently in place.
Being from opposite sides of the country at the time, Pennsylvania and California, it would have seemed that we could not have been more different. But, as we got to know each other, we found that we had more in common that one would think. We loved a good joke, the dryer the better.  
In working with him, Steve had a magnetism that seemed to draw everyone into his circle.  He has a way to talking that keeps one engaged and, for lack of better words, wanting to be better at what they do day in and day out. Even boring, mundane tasks seemed to be better with Steve in your corner.
He told me more than once: ‘You are the damnedest engineer I have ever worked with’ which seemed to be an insult at first, but as time passed, it was a true compliment.  When I asked him weeks later, he said that I had common sense, intelligence, and the technical knowledge that is rare to find.  I took the compliment and ran with it, all the while, not letting it go to my head.
I was able to stay in touch with Steve over the years. He always stressed the fact of being family focused- Him having 3 daughters and me having 3 boys. Shared the current war stories of what project I was working at the time, and he always had sage advice whenever we would talk.  I was glad to hear that he had moved to the beach, which he always mentioned in the past- getting out of the cold and into a warm climate.
Needless to say, I was taken by surprise hearing that he has passed. I am glad that he did not suffer, and he is now at peace.
Rest in Peace, Old Man. I will see you on the other side.
