Lyle's obituary

Stanley Lyle Phillips, age 61, of Memphis, Tennessee, passed away on August 31, 2023, in Pensacola, Florida.

Lyle was born on October 5, 1961, to Mae Ellen Mullen (later Shillingburg) and James “Sonny” Stanley Phillips. Lyle spent his early years living with his Aunt Margie. He attended Snowden Elementary and Central High School.

Lyle served as a stylist in Memphis for over 40 years and was known for his talent of creating and maintaining beautiful hair, but also for the love he displayed for those who sat in his chair. Lyle often formed meaningful relationships with his colleagues and clients, providing them with a listening ear, wise counsel, and an endless supply of his quick wit.

Lyle was able to recognize, create, and cultivate beauty within people, places, things, and circumstances. The world is a more beautiful place because he was in it.

Lyle was gifted at connecting with people and connecting people to one another. Many significant friendships and relationships were built as a result of sharing a meal together at one of his tables or dinner parties.

Lyle would regularly open his heart and home to those in need. He was generous with his time, talents, resources, and stories. He was quick to talk about his struggles and just as quick to acknowledge the transformational power of God within his life.

Lyle spent the last several years of his life helping others in their spiritual and recovery journeys. He believed in the power of recovery, and his life served as a testimony and encouragement to many.

Lyle delighted in his pets, art, music, reading, travel, the ocean, long-walks, bike rides, flowers, cooking, and eating delicious foods.

Lyle loved the holidays. His Easter meals were unmatched, his Halloween costumes were unexpected and hilarious, and his Christmas Tree was extravagant in splendor and lights.

Lyle was so fun. He brought laughter, joy, and encouragement to those in his presence. He made difficult days bearable and good days even better.

Lyle’s best day most certainly began on August 31st, while held in the arms of Jesus and hearing the words, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”

Lyle was preceded in death by his mother, Mae Ellen Shillingburg; father, James "Sonny" Stanley Phillips; great aunts, Marjorie Stanley and Dorothy Stanley; and siblings Evelyn Gaile Phillips and Joseph LaPicca.

He is survived by his siblings, William Provine, JoEllen Robinson, Gina Lehman, Beverly LaPicca, Loren Phillips; nieces and nephews, Richard Britton Phillips, Brenndon Lehman, Stephanie Robinson, Jessica Hays Fields, Laura Brook Phillips, Andrew Provine, Allison Provine; great nieces and nephews, Mak, Evan, Thomas, Elijah, Ava; cousin Joshua Deason.

Lyle is also survived by his aunt Nancy Magallanes and her husband Jose "Pepe" and their sons Jonathan and Christian, and their families.

In addition, Lyle is survived by countless colleagues, clients, and friends who loved him dearly.
