Sonya's obituary
Sonya Fortner Swayney, 60, of Coats, NC went to be with her savior in heaven on February 14th, 2025. She passed away peacefully at Cape Fear Memorial Hospital with her son, Max Fortner and daughter-in-law, Crystal, at her side.
Sonya, also known as “Lynne” by family, was cherished by many for her loving nature. She loved cooking which created a bond amongst her several siblings, son, and extended family. She was often found at the core of family gatherings, the center of the room, and a shining light.
A beloved mom, sister, and aunt, she will be greatly missed. She always made new friends and was loved by everyone she met. She was known for her kind, sweet, loving spirit. This came out with her love of animals, especially her cats.
Born September 16th, 1964 in Charlotte, NC to parents Chiltoskie and Sylvia Swayney, with her brothers, Kenny, Kelly, Buddy and Terry, and sister Kitty. They lived in a rambunctious and lively household. Many people knew the reputation of the Swayneys on Freedom Drive in Charlotte! Her and her siblings would grow up with many household chores including picking vegetables from their father’s garden. Sonya was often at the helm of cooking duties, while her sister, Kitty, cleaned. The Swayneys formed a bond that would be strong throughout their lives.
She became a mother to her son Max in 1992. When talking to Sonya, it was very clear that Max was the most important part of her life. She supported him unyieldingly throughout many of life's uncertain paths. She proudly displayed his portrait from his time in boot camp in the Marine Corps with great pride of her son’s accomplishment. In her final days, he would pay back her love as a comfort for her in her final moments.
Sonya was married to Max’s father, Brent Fortner, and engaged briefly to the late James Hamilton. She spoke fondly of both and held dear the memories they shared.
Looking through her Facebook page, one would see an overwhelming admiration for family, especially her mother and father, and of course, her son, Max.
The family would also like to offer a special thanks to friend, Jennifer Reaves for her unwavering support throughout Sonya's life and in her final days.
She is at peace and enjoying the heavenly life reunited with her loved ones who have already passed. She was preceded in death by both her parents and her brother, Kenny. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
