Simone's obituary

Simone Michelle Chaffiotte Mizell passed away on April 9th after a courageous battle with cancer. Simone wouldn’t want you to focus on dates (born on June 23, 1988; married on October 1, 2016). But she absolutely would want to tell you about the birth of her son, Aiden Patrick, on August 25, 2021. She loved Aiden more than words can express and he was the absolute light in her world, giving her the strength to fight on for so long so she could spend as much time with him as possible.

Simone also had immense love for her parents, Frank and Janice, and sister, Jordan. She was incredibly ambitious and had a passion for consumer insights and data, beginning her career as an intern at advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather and working her way up to Senior VP at another agency, Carat / Dentsu. She was lovingly known by her colleagues for talking loud and fast, and she finally decided to go client-side in 2022 as a Global Director at Anheuser-Busch and was incredibly grateful for their support the past year.

Simone graduated from UNC — Chapel Hill’s Kenan Flagler business school and was a proud Tar Heel. She loved traveling abroad, including spending semesters in Denmark and Hong Kong as part of UNC’s GLOBE program.

She was known for her selflessness, one of the traits her husband, Josh, admired most. She rarely worried about herself, instead taking others into consideration in every decision she made and always wanting to make sure that her “two babies”, her son and husband, were taken care of.

Simone and Josh met playing softball. Josh was super competitive, while Simone was mostly there for the fun. She may not have stolen any bases, but she did steal Josh’s heart.

Simone’s love of travel continued into adulthood. She had only been dating Josh for a few months when she joined him on a work trip to Indonesia. Since they were nearby, they decided to add a vacation to Australia, a place they both always wanted to visit. For their honeymoon, they traveled to South Africa and went on their first safari, the ultimate bucket list adventure for both of them.

At just 13 months old, Aiden’s first international trip was to South Africa to visit Simone’s and Josh’s favorite city, Cape Town (their 3rd visit)! While many thought they were crazy for embarking on such an adventure, Simone felt it was important that Aiden experienced some of their special restaurants like Miller’s Thumb and saw penguins in the wild as early as possible. Okay, maybe that last part was more at Josh’s insistence.

Another of Simone’s passions was cooking, and she enjoyed putting a healthy spin on everything. Green smoothies quickly became a favorite of Aiden’s! Josh’s favorite was her homemade cheesecake using Greek yogurt; this recipe was used to celebrate many special occasions. Simone also contributed to numerous philanthropic causes and enjoyed being a mentor to others in her industry.

Simone was a constant planner, always looking ahead to the next adventure. The next locations on her list were the Maldives, New Zealand, and Antarctica, and she was already planning Aiden’s 8th birthday, the minimum recommended age for going on safari. While Josh isn’t very good at planning or decision-making (both things Simone and her close friends would wholeheartedly agree with!), he is already thinking about taking Aiden on these trips and knows that Simone’s bright spirit will be with them every step of the way.

While saying prayers each night before bed, despite all the challenges they were facing, Josh, Simone, and Aiden always began by saying “thank you for our many blessings.” Simone considered every day a blessing and an opportunity to make the world a kinder, more caring place. Her compassion, determination, courage, and love will live on in the countless lives she touched.
