Shirley's obituary
Prelude to Shirley Bryant’s Obituary
On June 4, 2025, I lost not only my mother, but also my best friend. Like many mothers and daughters, we had our tumultuous years; but as I matured, I came to deeply admire her indomitable spirit and the grace with which she faced life’s many challenges.
We shared a love of nature, hiking, and playing *our* game of Upwords. I am honored to have cared for her over these past few years—a time that brought us even closer.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lon Neil Bryant; her son, Scott William Bryant and daughter Lynda Jo Lauderdale.
She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Erin Bryant; her sisters, Joyce Wright Peck and Judy Wright Reid; her grandchildren, Brady Aaron Lauderdale and William Bryant Crowe; and her great-grandchildren, Emmalyn Marcena Vanness and Brayden Lauderdale. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.
What follows is only a small glimpse into the abundant life she lived. Please feel free to share your own special memories and photos.
With love,
Jennifer Bryant
Shirley Darlene Bryant : Born 9/11/1930 Passed 5/4/2025
Small in stature, mighty in presence, Shirley's dynamic personality shone from the
beginning. Born in Guthrie, Oklahoma, her primary years were spent in Wichita, Kansas,
surrounded by several beloved cousins. Joining the family in 1938 were her twin sisters,
Joyce Wright Peck and Judy Wright Reid. Rooted in faith, their upbringing imparted a great
strength and a solid sense of self that prevailed throughout her life.
In 1941, the family moved to Oregon, settling in Eugene and Portland. After high school,
Shirley attended U of O, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. During her sophomore year, she met
Lon Bryant, an undergrad law student whom she married in 1956. Lon embraced her two
children, Lynda and Scott, from a previous marriage, welcoming her third child, Jennifer, in
1958.
After graduating, they moved to Portland, Oregon, as Lon started his new law practice.
Shirley's career blossomed as well. Trained in banking and bookkeeping, she transitioned
to real estate, winning Realtor of the Year in 1966. Although Shirley demonstrated a strong
work ethic, the Bryant household was a hub of activity, full of fun and laughter. She loved
playing every game, from cards to croquet. Her many hobbies included hiking, fishing,
camping, gardening, traveling, and all sports—especially college football. Go Ducks! She
shared her love of all sports with her children and grandchildren, attending every event they
participated in.
Shirley and Lon, along with their many lifelong friends, a.k.a. “The Posse”, traveled
extensively throughout the U.S. and abroad, bringing home unique artworks reflective of
the cultures they experienced. During Shirley's long life, she impacted many people,
leaving behind a legacy etched in the minds and hearts of family and friends. They will
continue to share her stories and celebrate her incredible life.
“To live in the hearts of people we leave behind is not to die.”
