Shawn's obituary
Shawn passed away on the morning of August 16th in Taipei, Taiwan, after a courageous three-year battle with cancer. Throughout his illness, Shawn fought with incredible mental strength and unwavering positivity despite the immense pain and suffering he endured. He passed away surrounded by his loved ones.
Shawn was a highly gifted track and field athlete and ranked nationally in the 800m and 1500m events. He competed at Dartmouth, where he distinguished himself as one of the top runners in the country, and subsequently graduated in 1985. Soon after, he met his wife Ellen, and in 1990 they embarked on a new chapter together in Taipei, Taiwan. Shawn made a lasting impact in the food industry as the owner of the renowned Uncle Bubba’s Fried Chicken—a restaurant so beloved it gained media attention across Taiwan. He later dedicated many years to managing the food service department at Taipei American School, where he became a cornerstone of the school community.
Shawn had a deep passion for cooking. He was known for his famous roasted turkeys, which became an eagerly anticipated tradition every Thanksgiving and Christmas. Whether it was preparing a holiday feast or simply cooking dinner for his family each night, Shawn found joy in bringing people together through his culinary talents.
For those of us lucky enough to experience Shawn's never-ending sense of humor, radiant energy, kindness, and passion for life, his presence will be deeply missed. His ability to uplift and care for others—even in the face of his own struggles—was a testament to his remarkable spirit. He leaves behind a legacy of resilience, and has inspired us to embrace every moment with positivity and gratitude.
Shawn is survived by his devoted wife, Ellen, his loving son, Brandon, and his cherished daughter, Monica. As we grieve this profound loss, we also celebrate the life of a truly one-of-a-kind man who brought joy to so many.
We invite everyone to celebrate Shawn’s life by sharing their memories and stories of him on this page. Your remembrances will help keep his spirit alive and allow us all to honor the incredible person he was.
