Sharan's obituary
In Loving Memory of Dr. Sharan Ramaswamy
July 18, 1973 – July 10, 2025
Sharan Ramaswamy — devoted husband, father, son, brother, scientist, and friend — passed away peacefully on July 10, 2025, just days before his 52nd birthday, after a courageous battle with Corticobasal Degeneration (CBD), a rare and devastating neurodegenerative disease.
Since the beginning of the year, Sharan had been suffering profoundly, trapped in a body that no longer served him. Diagnosed in 2022, the disease progressed with brutal speed. From the earliest symptoms in 2021, it slowly took away his ability to move, to speak, to remember, and eventually even to eat. It left him completely disabled and gradually erased the vibrant, brilliant, and deeply loving man we knew. He was helpless in the face of this cruel disease, and we were left hopeless, watching him fade day by day. And yet, what remained—always—was his spirit and his love.
Born in Singapore on July 18, 1973, Sharan lived a life defined by purpose, warmth, and quiet brilliance. He was a highly respected Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Florida International University in Miami. His research focused on regenerative solutions for congenital heart valve disease in children. A passionate and visionary scientist, he dedicated his life’s work to building growth-capable, stem-cell–seeded living valves—work that he hoped would save countless young lives. “I just want to save children,” he often said.
Beyond his scholarly achievements, Sharan was known for his easygoing nature, playful sense of humor, and deep love for life’s simple joys. He was a gifted Carnatic singer, a lover of global cuisines, and the kind of person who could make others laugh even on the hardest days. He was a tender, endlessly devoted father who cherished his children more than anything. He never wanted Jayram and Samhita to grow up too fast and took great joy in babying them, holding tightly to their innocence. That same affection extended to the family’s beagle, Sprinkle, who was just as adored.
Above all, Sharan was a devoted husband to his wife, Mallika Sharan. Their partnership was one of unwavering support, laughter, shared purpose, and deep love—strengthened even further through the challenges they faced together.
Though the disease took so much, it never stole Sharan’s essence. His kindness, brilliance, and love endure—in the lives he touched, in the children he fought to help, and in the family that carries him forward.
He is survived by his wife, Mallika; his beloved children, Jayram and Samhita; and their cherished dog, Sprinkle. He also leaves behind his loving sisters, Gayathri and Nithya; extended family; colleagues; students; and friends around the world.
He will be deeply missed, fiercely loved, and forever remembered.
