Scott's obituary
Scott Whitmore
September 15, 1951- February 12, 2023
The hearty chuckle of Scott Whitmore will echo in our memories. Lynn Scott Whitmore died Sunday, February 12, 2023 at the age of 71. Scott was a hard-working, community minded man that loved to share good conversations and never turned away from fun banter.
Scott was born in Sioux Falls, SD 1951. After graduating from Washington High School, he hopped on his motorcycle and with the wind at his back traveled the USA taking in the beauty and liberty our country offers. He paused in various places like Pennsylvania and Arizona before settling down to start his first business, a
leather clothing and accessory store in Bozeman, MT. He then decided to lay down his roots in Missoula, MT in 1977 while attending the U of M.
After spending a few years as an employee of H&R Janitorial, he bought the business from the owner in the early 1980’s. His entrepreneurial spirit and love for serving people showed through in his business. He served the western Montana community joyfully for over 30 years before closing the doors permanently.
His strong commitment to serving the community was demonstrated in many ways, including his passion for co-organizing MisCon (a science fiction convention celebrating literacy and the arts). At MisCom he was fondly known as “The Wise One” and “Shurhawk”. He packed and delivered meals each Thanksgiving and he supported youth programs and community gardening.
The joy he brought to so many will be remembered and missed. He was preceded in death by his parents Don and Lucille Whitmore; by his brothers Larry and Lyle Whitmore and his
Sister-in-law Pam Whitmore. He is survived by his sister Loreene Reid, his brother Layton Whitmore and his sister-in-law Judy Whitmore; six nieces and nephews, Nicole (Joe), Brett
(Tenesa), Nathan, Ben (Skyler), Andrew and Ashlie (Alfonso): and five great niece and nephews; Hunter, Dakota, Blakley, Connor and Andres.
The family expresses special thanks to the Partners in Home Care, Missoula Pharmacy, and Community Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Center for their exceptional care and diligence in helping Scott maintain his independence and dignity through his health journey.
In lieu of memorial contributions, the family requests that you take time to volunteer in your community as Scott did. They feel this will honor his legacy best.
Please join us for a memorial service August 12 in the Fort Missoula Regional Park, Meadowlark Shelter (3031 South Ave W Missoula, MT). Service will begin at 2pm with a celebration of life reception to follow.
