My condolences to Sandy, the name he wanted everyone to call him. While Lucy left out mention of any of the family and friends that grew up with him, and loved him, and that his happiest years were when he was in High School (West Side High, Newark, N.J.). He excelled there in music (he sang on the street corners of Newark with Franki Vali before he became Franki Vali) and baseball (he pitched several no-hitters in high school). But his happiness derived from the thousands of friends he had. He knew people everywhere. I drove with him to Canada to visit the Worlds Fair. We were stopped at a red light when 3 guys came up to his car and said, "Is that you Sandy? I thought you'd be playing with the New York Yankees by now." That is the Sandy Herman that everyone needs to remember. In his last years he told me frequently what his friends meant to him, especially those friendships that started in Newark.

Sandy was a great person and friend. I worked with him at Caldwell toyota from 94 to 2000. I have nothing but Good memories. He would have went out of his way for anyone, even a stranger. I have thought of him through the years and will never forget him. His kindness made a impact on me. I pray peace in the hearts and minds of his family.
Sincerely,
Patrick Tomb

Sandy’s father remarried when he was about 3 years old. He never knew his birth mother or family. After extensive searching, they were found in a town near Atlanta, Ga. The picture shows his sister Patsy on the left, then Sandy next to her. Sister Nancy and brother Lee complete the family picture. This was one of the happiest days and time of his life.
