Sending my love and prayers to Alexia and the rest of Sam’s family. I knew him when he was a young boy. Such a bright light where he went. Totally loving and totally loved. So powerful for a young boy. That’s what I remember

My deepest sympathies to Gretchen and Sam’s dear family. We need more “Sam Fry” folks in the world. Lucky there was one. ❤️

I'm heartbroken, and reading all these stories of Sam, I realize that I lost out not knowing him better. I cherish the time we spent with Sam in our remote cabin as a youth. He was smart and so very kind. Gretchen, I can't imagine the pain and loss you are experiencing. Your family is amazing and strong, and I wish I could carry some of the burden of grief for you all. I will always love you all.

My favorite Sam memory was the thrill and joyfulness he had when we tackled felling the junk trees in the garden space he helped me clear out. Dakota and I both send our love and we're so sorry for your loss and sorrow. Sam was exceptional.

Sam was a true light for others. He gave so much of himself. I trained him as a book shelver when he first started at the library in Sacramento. He was a joy to work with, always present in the moment. Interested and involved, immediately helpful. Stellar sense of humor, sometimes wickedly funny. Kind and compassionate. We had some great conversations. Thank you, Sam, for knowing little things mean a lot, for doing instead of watching, and always looking for ways to make the world a better place.

From Gordon:
Sam was my youngest brother, and although he didn’t dress or talk or behave like me or any of my friends, he had a truly magical ability to immediately delight and win over all kinds of people in all kinds of situations, just by being so genuine and hilarious.
It didn’t matter what kind of crowd I brought him around: anarchists, builders, punk rockers, whatever- he would show up and get to work on whatever needed to be done, he would start cracking people up and causing general delight, and by the time a few hours had passed, everyone would love him so much that you’d have though he was THEIR little brother too. He had that effect on people.
He was a human cannonball of silly comedic energy. He never shrank from hard work, he was brave and fierce in standing by what he knew to be right, he was humble and kind down to his bones, and he could walk right up to any musical instrument you can think of and play the hell out of it, with no apparent effort. He was one in a billion, and what we lost when he left us is incalculable.

Sam and I used to play a lot of Stratego, a board game in which your soldiers attack those of your opponent, one at a time. The highest-ranking soldier wins. It's a simple game involving no luck; it is won or lost based on your pre-game planning.
The first (maybe second) time we played, Sam was 9 and I was 36. He won. That wasn't a huge shock -- he was a very bright kid.
The shocking part was revealed in the post-game examination of each other's strategies. Sam had hidden his marshal -- the highest-ranking piece of them all -- in his back row, surrounded by his own, immovable bombs. The marshal was safe, to be sure, but could never leave his spot unless I'd tripped one of those bombs, which didn't happen.
At one-quarter my age, the boy had beaten me -- without the use of his best piece.

I had the good fortune of working with Sam at SPL. To learn of his passing is truly heartbreaking. He was the embodiment of a stand-up guy. My sympathies to his family and those closest to him.

I worked with Sam for over 10 years. A sweet, sweet soul. Funny, brilliant, compassionate, and always a bringer of sunshine and a terrific laugh.

Sam was such an incredibly gifted pianist and musician. This was at the reception for a wedding (mine; didn’t take-but it’s a beautiful photo!!) and Sam found the piano in the corner and began playing for all of us. I can’t find him in the subsequent group photos - I wonder if he was still playing. I love you, Sam. Thank you for all the delightful music.
