Background
My youngest brother, Sam Fry, died on Monday, August 26th. Sam was the brightest and best of us. He was the light of everyone's life, and the gentlest soul anyone ever met. Even as a sibling, I can't think of a single criticism I ever had about him (if you have siblings, you know that's saying something!). As the youngest of six siblings, Sam was a delight in our family from day one. He made us laugh every day, he was creative and talented and simply so alive. As an adult, he dedicated his life to libraries, community outreach, nonprofits, and grassroots actions to feed his neighbors and fix bikes for free. He loved books, music, basketball, documentaries, learning, helping others, laughing, and making people laugh.
Tragically, Sam had been struggling with a severe mental illness for the past year or more and has been in and out of hospitals and frequently in crisis. He eventually succumbed to his illness and took his own life.
We, his family and loved ones, are reeling from this news, even though we knew of his struggles. It is still a shock, and we will never be the same without him.
Sam comes from a tight-knit family and is survived by his five siblings, their spouses and families, his mother and adoptive father, and his beloved wife Kim.
We are raising funds in Sam's memory to help with funeral, memorial, and other unexpected expenses such as family member emergency travel. We will donate any remaining funds to the causes closest to Sam's heart, including the Sacramento Bike Kitchen, Sacramento Food Not Bombs, prisoner support and library programs.
Any amount will help us with all of the unexpected expenses and the donations we want to make in his memory. We also encourage donations directly to any human services nonprofits, in lieu of flowers to the family.
It is so important to us to remember that we are connected to those around us, the people that Sam loved and care for, and that loved and cared for him, and all of us. If you are unable to make a financial contribution, please know that we are also so appreciative of your messages of love and support, your sharing of your memories and any photos that were meaningful to you, and stories of how many lives Sam’s touched. If you didn't know Sam in life, we appreciate the support you provide to us - his surviving family members - in our grief, just as much.
Our family varies in spiritual beliefs, but I appreciate your prayers to whatever higher power you believe in: for strength to do whatever is logistically necessary; strength to take care of ourselves, and grieve whenever and however is necessary. For finances to all work out no matter what happens with jobs or unexpected financial burdens. Prayers for a better world, and for all who struggle with these illnesses.
Prayers for Sam to be in peace and with us always. He was the kindest, funniest, most talented of us and I cannot think of him without remembering the laughing, delightful kid he always was and will be to me. We were SO lucky to have him in our lives for over 30 years.
To anyone reading this, I love you all and hope you are well. Take care of yourselves; take care of each other. That is the only thing that matters. Contribute
