Ron Winkler, son of Edward and Rowena Winkler, was raised in Kentfield, Marin County, California. He went to Sir Francis Drake High School when it was a brand new school, and then furthered his education at College of Marin. He enlisted in the United States Air Force and served at Edwards Air Force Base among other places. He worked on helicopters at the time, and later when he'd been discharged he learned to fly them. He flew for SFO Airlines for several years, even had some students of his own. He met his sweetheart, Janice, in 1963. They married the following year and had four children together. For several years, both husband and wife worked at Bechtel in San Francisco.

The family lived in California for decades; Novato, Placerville, and Camino. Then Ron and Jan lived in the Birmingham, Alabama area when they served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They moved to Oak Harbor, Washington, to be near their youngest son when they finished their mission, and less than two years ago had moved to Omak, Washington.

Ron is survived by his wife, Janice, three step-children (Terri, Aimee, Kyle), four children (Marc, Andrew, Paul, Karen), twelve grandchildren (Briana, Christopher, Sarah, Ryan, Jared, Kelsi, Andrew, Ruby, Mason, Kate, Sierra, and Aidan), and two great-grandchildren (Mason and Michelle).
