Ronald's obituary

Ron Custer was a man's man and a mentor to many men.

His father (a survivor of the dust bowl and the great depression) brought his family from Iowa to California in 1949, ultimately landing in Grass Valley in 1951. Ray Custer, worked as a mechanic as well as driving logging truck for the many mills in town at the time. Ron's mother was a homemaker with a passion for flowers.

In the early 1950s they purchased and moved into a rundown miner's shack on a piece of property that is, to this day, known as Custer's Corner on Greenhorn Rd. Ray built his family's home by trading his time demolishing various old buildings in the area for the scrap materials. This early childhood experience was foundational to Ron's life of resilience, determination, and imaginative creativity that characterized his unique personality.

He became a master at auto body repair and artistic paint jobs. He was skilled in building hot rods and restoring antique cars which became his most enjoyable occupation in his "retirement years".

Ron was proud to be one of the original five founding Roamin Angels, a classic car club, which began in 1961 in Grass Valley.  His plaque was one of his most prized treasures.

He married Theresa Glasgow in 1968, and she bore his two sons Ronald Ray and O'Banyon Custer.  They parted ways in 1974 leaving Ron with custody as a single dad until 1981 when he married Pamella Coffee, a longtime friend and mother of three, Mitchell, Spring, and Levi. Together, Ron and Pam began the monumental task of blending two very broken families into one incredibly strong family as all five of HIS kids will emphatically attest to.

Ron was ordained a minister of Christ on September 22,1992, and "Roadside Ministries" was born.  He and Pam spent the next ten years coming along side other small ministries using his mechanic and contractor skills building up the Kingdom of God in tangible and practical ways.

The last twenty years of his life have been dedicated to planting three small Constitutionally Free churches in Grass Valley, CA, Northport, WA, and Ryndon, NV. The last four years have been dedicated to establishing "Damian's House", a community center in Ryndon for homeschooled children living off grid.  Just recently the property has been turned over to two of his grandsons to steward and carry on his legacy.

In addition, in the last six months Ron began work to establish a Constitutionally Free church in the California state prison system, which is still in its infancy.

Donations can be made to Roadside Ministries in lieu of flowers with all donations going directly to supplies for the Nevada and Prison ministries.

Ron's legacy is one of gently guiding people by example out of their brokenness into the glorious light of the Kingdom of God. Orphans and widows are especially dear to his heart. He was simply just the very best husband, dad, grandpa, great grandpa, mentor, and friend a person could ever hope for.

May his name be for a blessing.

May his children continue to be blessed
