I was very sorry to hear to the passing of Mr. Ron Fontenot. He was dear to me and the McCray family. Ron hired me at Bell Labs right after finishing my master's degree in electrical engineering from Northwestern University. He was very supportive of me throughout my career. Ron even asked me to deliver one of the keynotes at a CABPES fundraising banquet.  I smile ever time I think of him.

My younger sister, Rispba, remembers him fondly too. He helped her with a science project in high school resulting in her winning first place.

Ron left our world a better place. I pray that when God calls me home, he will say too: "Well done my faithful servant!"

I continue to pray for the Fontenot family as you mourn the loss of your dear Ron, whose heart was truly committed to family and community.  I will always remember my time with Ron at Bell Labs, CABPES and JETS.  His legacy will continue be seen in all of those he impacted through his life. Peace and Blessings.
Dedication to My Mentor and Friend
Ronald Fontenot, Sr. , or "Mr. Fontenot", as I always called him was one of my closest mentors and advisors in the community service world. I have known him since my youth, first meeting him in 1988 when he was a teacher for the JETS program. Mr. Fontenot had a profound impact on me—and on hundreds, no, thousands—of kids of color who were interested in exploring and pursuing careers in technology and engineering. Grassroots community programs like CABPES were strong in Metro Denver when I was growing up. There were a plethora of local after-school programs and community centers that helped me explore career opportunities I might never have considered if not for the exposure and hands-on activities facilitated by generous adults like Ron, who gave freely of their time and talents.
After participating in the JETS after-school program, I could truly envision myself becoming a computer engineer, having witnessed positive Black male role models who were successful engineers right in my own backyard. Just a few years after that brief stint in JETS, I became the fortunate recipient of a full-ride scholarship in engineering to the University of Oklahoma. My first career right out of college was in the I.T. field. That is no coincidence. It was the result of intentional, purposeful men and women—many of whom were active church members—who saw the gaps in youth mentorship and created programs to fill them. They rallied volunteers and bootstrapped many of these wonderful opportunities into existence.
I will deeply miss him, but I take comfort in knowing the profound impact he and his family have had on so many lives, including my own. As a founding board member of Colorado Futuretek, I witnessed Ron, his wife Patricia, and co-founder John Henson bring an idea to life through their exceptional management and fundraising skills, tenacity, integrity, and respected reputation in the community. That idea has now become a living legacy that reverberates for multiple generations thanks to the foundation laid by the passion and love of Ron, Patricia, John, and so many other stakeholders behind the scenes. I am proud to say that my own children are now benefiting from participating in Colorado Futuretek.
Throughout my life’s journey, Ron served as a true mentor and community role model. I will always be grateful for his guidance and support. One word that defines Mr. Fontenot to me is: dedication. First, his unwavering dedication to God and the body of Christ. He was a true man of faith, serving in multiple roles at True Light Baptist Church with a deep love for the Word and African history. Second, his dedication to his family. The partnership between him and Patricia was a beautiful sight to behold. Her quiet grace and steadfast support behind the scenes never ceased to impress me. Third, his dedication to nurturing and uplifting his community. He was a versatile educator who loved teaching math as much as he loved telling Bible stories in Sunday School. He was innovative and open to new ideas. If a suggestion I brought to him helped more people—young or old—learn technology or get jobs that led to living wages in STEAM fields, he was all in. And yet, he never hesitated to speak truth and tell me—or anyone—when an idea wasn’t sound. I admired his unwavering ability to hold us to high standards in service to others.
He was a humble, tireless community servant who worked just as hard post-retirement as he did during his 30-year engineering career. He continued to serve as a deacon and Bible teacher, taught math part-time at local colleges, and ran a nonprofit for over a decade—simultaneously and tirelessly—until the very end. He loved hiking. The only “reset” I ever saw him do consistently every year was taking his family to the mountains. The fruit of his good works on earth is truly remarkable and inspiring, and there is no doubt in my mind that he earned many crowns in heaven.
As I pray a prayer of memorial and thanksgiving for this man who committed to walking alongside me throughout my life journey, I also pray for strength, peace, and comforting memories for Patricia, Christine, David, Ron Jr., and their entire family during this difficult time.
May God’s presence be felt in every step they take. I pray that the family and stakeholders of Colorado Futuretek will continue to carry Ron’s banner of integrity, generosity, and unwavering dedication to the community.

The Montgomery family sends our sincerest condolences.

Mr. Ron Fontenot has left a lasting generational impact not only on the members of our family but also on the community in which we flourish. Always emphasizing education, peer support, and the continued development of black youth, Mr. Fontenot opened our eyes to a world of Black excellence that was previously just an idea to many.

We first met Mr. Ron Fontenot through the JETS program of CABPES. He supported the Montgomery family’s youth for decades to come. They learned a great deal from him, encompassing STEM, public speaking skills, and general leadership. None of us could be where we are now if it were not for the care that Mr. Fontenot showed for Black youth across our city.

Mr. Fontenot allowed us the opportunity to be exposed to successful Black people in STEM. He not only inspired us through his actions and success but also provided us with many opportunities to grow within those fields. As Black youth growing up in Denver, we are not often able to interact with other Black children, and even less so with those who are interested in science and tech. Mr. Fontenot helped create a safe space for us to connect with other Black children interested in STEM.

Mr. Fontenot delivered working opportunities to plenty of young men and women of color. It felt great having a boss who was not only relatable but also understood the lifestyle of the employees. This world needs more role models and bosses who can be comfortably connected to, and Mr. Fontenot was an incredible example of this.

Through Mr. Fontenot, we were introduced to the W.O.W. program, where we cultivated connections between Black youth and our elders. We met some of the wisest, fun-loving uncles and aunts that I may have never been introduced to had I not been in this program. These ladies and gentlemen were fountains of knowledge that allowed us to connect with our empowering history.

I want to thank God for giving us such an angel, Ron Fontenot. I thank his wife for sharing him with us. He has given so much to our family. My children have benefited so much from him. Starting with my oldest son almost twenty years ago, and my youngest son today with Silvertek. Thanks for being the “Village”. We cherish you and your memory.

To the Fontenot Family. We have all been blessed by Ron in so many ways that I am at a loss for words. I credit him for inspiring and helping all five of our children to seek greatness in the world, and even inspire the people around them to be inspired by him. Our family spent a large part of this Father’s Day reminiscing about him with deep appreciation and a fondness that only we who know him can understand. We are realizing the gift to this world that he was and will continue to be, as his legacy lives in all of us. May God be pleased…

Ron Fontenot’s legacy lives on as we carry forward his mission, his dream, and his drive that he instilled in us with each step we take.

Mr. Fontenot’s impact does not end with his direct interactions, but it funnels multi-generational pipelines, enlightening young men and women who’ve never met him.

Mr. Fontenot was such a kind, genuine and gentle, yet strong being. He has impacted our family from top to bottom. Our parents had an opportunity to interact with such a pillar in the community. The youth had the opportunity to learn lifelong skills and took those skills into the community to pass along those teachings.
