Robert's obituary

Robert (Bob) George Urie, 78, of Texarkana, Arkansas, passed away on January 22nd, 2023 in Kyle, Texas. Bob lived an amazing life, filled with a loving marriage to Christine, three beautiful children and an impactful profession as a Doctor of Psychology. In addition to having a never-ending sense of humor, he was also a devoted friend to many, a collector of historical and antique objects, a bookworm, and an avid golfer.

Having grown up alongside his brothers Jim and Jack and sister Charlotte, Bob learned to lead by example from his parents Murray and Shirley Urie. Although he was a shy kid, he became a skilled listener and leader with unrestrained strong positive emotions.

Bob graduated from Scottsdale High School and was a lifelong learner, earning degrees from Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, and Kansas University, culminating in a Ph.D. in clinical psychology. Alongside his work as a practicing marriage and family therapist, he was deeply involved in in the North Kansas City men’s breakfast club for over 20 years. Bob also supported the North Kansas City police department as a clinical psychologist serving police officers on the force.

In 1974, Bob married Christine (Chris) Kay Ainsworth of Higginsville, MO. The two met at Wyandotte Mental Health Center during their internship where their connection was magnetic, and all could sense that their union was meant to be. For those who witnessed the moment they met, their first encounter was so powerful that those around them watched in amazement. Bob brought his first and deeply loved daughter Malia into his marriage with Chris, and soon daughter Rachel and son Luke completed their family. Bob was a caring and devoted husband and father, instilling a love of learning, service to others, and his profound gift of empathy and kindness. Throughout their life together, Bob and Chris would host legendary holiday parties and go on family trips that rivaled “National Lampoon’s Family Vacation”. These memories live on in the stories still told today amongst friends and family. Bob discovered a love of golf in his thirties and enjoyed perfecting his game and visiting his favorite courses internationally.

After working at Tri-County Mental Health Center for many years, Bob and Chris founded Urie & Associates in North Kansas City, MO. Their shared passion for helping others culminated into a practice that spanned 35 years. Bob retired from Urie & Associates in 2016, where he had fulfilled his passion for serving others through both his work and a lifelong commitment to helping anyone he encountered along his path. Anyone he met throughout his day was the recipient of Bob’s kindness, fantastic conversation skills and witty humor. He enjoyed traveling with his family and friends in retirement, especially his and Chris’s trips abroad with best friends Bob and Charlotte Bruyn. He loved supporting each of his three children in their life and professional endeavors, and spending time with his five grandchildren: Scarlett and Apollo (Rachel and Chris Tanner) and Andrew, Hudson and Sophia (Luke and Anna Urie).

Bob was a compassionate, honest, thoughtful, and wise man. He was a man full of love, and someone who would always encourage you to be your best throughout your life. He taught others forgiveness and empathy and was someone everyone wanted to be around. He walked through a 15-year battle with Parkinson’s disease with dignity and grace, leaving a permanent mark of love on his family and cherished friends. In lieu of a service, the Urie family encourages a donation made in Bob’s name to The Parkinson's Foundation or any other charity of your choice.
