Robert's obituary

Robert Louis Grialou, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, teacher, and coach, passed away peacefully on January 17, 2025, surrounded by his family in Sacramento, California. He was 82 years old.

Born on November 19, 1942, in Oakland, California, Rob lived a life dedicated to education, athletics, and service. After graduating from San Francisco State University, he served in the National Guard before embarking on a long and impactful career as a physical education teacher and coach. Rob’s teaching career spanned Southwood Junior High, El Camino High School, and South San Francisco High School, where he inspired countless students and athletes, many of whom he guided to become coaches themselves.

Rob’s passion for sports extended to the community he lived in. He was a devoted coach and leader in San Mateo, coaching Little League Baseball, the San Mateo Youth Basketball Association (SMYBA), Babe Ruth Baseball, and San Mateo Youth Softball Association (SMYSA). His leadership and love for the game led him to serve on the boards of these sports leagues, where he played a pivotal role in managing each organization.

Even after retiring from teaching, Rob remained an active supporter of youth sports. His dedication to the profession continued through his work with the California Coaches Association, where he focused on honoring and recognizing coaches across the state.

Rob is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Suzan Grialou; his children, Craig (50) and wife Diane, Steve (47) and wife Melissa, and Nicole (43); and his three cherished grandchildren, Shelby (17), Ariana (13), and Benjamin (10).

Rob’s legacy is one of service, mentorship, and love for his family, friends, and community. His guidance and encouragement left an indelible mark on the lives he touched.

In honor of Rob, the family suggests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to San Mateo National Little League, Rock Steady Boxing, or a youth sports organization in your local community to honor his memory and his lifelong dedication to supporting young athletes and coaches.
