Dick was a no nonsense father but any degree of strictness was tempered by the fact that he was a lovable goofball.

Kelly and I would often and unwittingly test his good humor and his tolerance. One of my fondest and embarrassing moments involved Kelly’s stack of 45rpm records.

Somehow we hooked up two sets of headphones to her record player. Headphones were a big deal in the 70s so it felt like we were in some kind of a recording studio belting out lyrics to the stacks of 45s loaded on her turn table.

After working through the hit parade for an extended period of time, Dick called Kelly on her bedroom phone. He liked to do that rather than trudge down the hallway. This also was the signal that we were probably in trouble.

Kelly removed her headphones and disappeared but I was deep into the groove so continued my solo performance until I realized that Kelly was not returning.

I set my headphones aside and went to the kitchen to catch Dick losing it. I was more than slightly shocked that he did not appreciate our vocal talents. The entire time Kelly was getting an earful from her father I was in the background giving Dick an earful of what I thought was unprecedented talent.

He was both a good sport and a great father and above all tolerant. Kelly will have to confirm this, but it’s a miracle that Dick is survived by that same stack of 45s. At the time I feared that we had seen the last of them.
