Richard's obituary

Richard Mason Helsel, age 80, died at home with family, entering heaven's gates on August 30th in San Antonio, Texas. Richard was born on July 30th, 1939, in Edgemont, South Dakota to parents Mason and Estella Helsel. Richard graduated from Edgemont High School (1957), Trinity Bible College (1961), Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Science in Dairy Production (1969) and completed his Master's degree work in Agriculture Economics.

Among his jobs he was employed by General Foods as a production manager, owned and operated a dairy farm in southeast Kansas and managed the dairy barns at Kansas State University. After relocating to Lubbock, Richard worked as an office supply salesman for Baker Office Supply for 20 years. Whether visiting clients in town or in the surrounding communities, he always brought a smile and a laugh to all of those who he served.

Richard was a great husband and a loving father. He was a tall man at 6'2" and all muscle but also gentle and kind.

He married Deloris Wakefield in Sturgis, South Dakota in 1959. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary earlier this year in June. Richard and Deloris had two children including Julie Lynette who died in infancy.

Richard was social, active and was deeply involved in all aspects of his church and he helped in many ways. He did everything from building new tables and chairs for the children in Sunday School to leading the congregation in songs on Sunday mornings. He did that and much, much more but mostly it was out sight. He had a heart for service and did everything he knew how to love on the folks that God brought into his life.

Richard was an avid hunter and enjoyed the outdoors. Whether hunting by himself or with family or friends he he reveled in the majesty of God's creation as it was waking up in the morning or as it went to sleep at night.

Richard is survived by his wife, Deloris, son and daughter-in-law Scott & Rosanna Helsel, granddaughter Lydia English, great granddaughter Charlotte English, brother Ed Helsel and sister Phyllis Mudge.
