Rex's obituary

Rex Edwin Olpin (55) was born to Margaret and Larry Olpin in Salt Lake City, Utah on November 1, 1964. Rex passed away unexpectedly on July 2nd, 2020 after an apparent heart attack in his home in Folsom, California.

Rex graduated from Warrensburg High School in 1983. He spent two years serving in Geneva Switzerland as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Rex graduated from BYU in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics. He earned a Masters Degree of International Management in 1990 from Thunderbird University.

He met his wife, Ruth Johnson, while serving as a missionary. They were married May 12, 1988 in the Manti, Utah Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Rex was a dedicated husband and father to four children, Erin, Ben, Richard and James Olpin. He loved being Grandpa to 5 grandchildren.

Rex spent the last 20 years working at Intel as a Product Support Engineer and a Manager. He was known to push his team hard to excel because he always brought his best every day. He said one of the best parts of his job was working with his team and seeing them grow and enjoy their jobs.

He loved to travel and visited over 40 counties. He lived in France, Switzerland, Turkey, Russia and Canada. He and his wife enjoyed traveling together in Europe several times.

Rex loved the outdoors and found many opportunities to hike, run, camp, and lead boy scout troops. A detailed planner, he would organize a hike for any group or hiker, no matter their level. His favorite hikes include Shasta, Yosemite (half dome and cloud's rest) and anywhere in the desolation wilderness. Rex spent nearly two decades as a Boy Scout leader. He celebrated his 3 boys earning the Eagle Scout rank and mentored many others.

Rex loved sports. He was especially proud of his Kansas City Royals, Chiefs, and Brigham Young University (BYU) Cougars. He was also a fixture at Folsom Bulldog games watching his three sons play or cheering on the football team with his friends on “the hill.” In February this year, Rex made a last-minute decision to attend the Super Bowl with some close friends. He was able to see his beloved Chiefs bring home their 1st trophy in 50 years.

Rex's life was filled with service motivated by his love for Jesus Christ. He was loved by his friends and family whose only regret is that they didn't get more time to spend with him. They look forward to a joyful reunion in the life to come.
