Randall's obituary
Randy was born in Tyler, Texas, on October 7, 1950. He moved to Brigham City with his family in 1960, and graduated from Box Elder High School in 1969. While at BEHS he was President of the National Honor Society, Drum Major for the Marching Band, played oboe in Concert Band, guitar in Jazz Band, and represented BEHS as a Sterling Scholar. During this time, he enjoyed serving his community while growing as a leader on his path to becoming an Eagle Scout, and proudly earned The Order of the Arrow.
NASA recruited Randy for their Co-op program at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas in 1971 while he was still an electronics engineering student at University of Houston. The majority of his career at NASA was spent developing and implementing communications systems for the Shuttle Program. He retired from a distinguished 36 year career at NASA in 2007. In 1973 he married VeAnn Christoffersen, a Brigham City, Utah native, and had two children, Ann Elisabeth and Austin Clay.
Music became a lifelong passion for Randy - not just the playing and listening of it, but the harmony, structure, techniques, and history. During high school he was a DJ at KBUH Radio Station on weekends. He played and taught guitar, electric bass, harmonica, and sang in Classic Rock bands from the time he was a teenager - even commuting to Houston to play gigs for a couple years after he moved back to Utah in 2009.
Randy loved to ski in his younger years, and that is how he met his high school sweetheart, Kristine Armstrong (Larsen), from Brigham City, Utah. Later in life their paths crossed again and they were married August 29, 2009, and moved back to his beloved Utah mountains to make a home with Kris in Mantua.
Preceding him in death are his father, Wilton Richards, his mother, Christine Parham Ballew and step father, Charles Ballew. Surviving are his wife, Kristine, of Mantua, his daughter, Ann Elisabeth Zook (Jon), their children, Cassidy and Aiden, and a son, Austin Clay Richards, all of Houston, Texas. Also, Randy has three step children and two step grandchildren; Jaime Larsen-Ferris (Bryan) and daughter, Mia of Vancouver, B.C., Terence Larsen and his daughter, Rhiannon, and Whitney Larsen, all of Clearfield, Utah. Siblings, Martha Benson (Jim) of Jupiter, Florida, Larry Richards (Gwen) of Manvel, Texas, Sharla Ronstadt (Fred) of Tucson, Arizona, also mourn his passing.
